Best Uses For,And Things Not To Use Vm For?

Hi Folks -
I am a newbie to virtual box - could you share with me some of the things you use virtualbox for and why you do it the way you do?
Also, what are the sorts of things that for whatever reason, are best not done in vm's but rather a normal host machine?

User Manual Chapter 1.1 Why is virtualization useful?. On the other hand VMs are not that great when 3D acceleration is heavily involved (games, CAD, etc.) and when controlling hardware that has specific requirements (mainly timing).
