[Solved] - Windows 10 - window scaling doesn't work

Post by ne0h »

Hi,

I am facing an issue with my Windows 10 guest system which occured about 3 weeks ago.

When resizing the VM window, Windows 10 doesn't scale dynamically anymore which it did before. The option for automatic scaling in the VM menu is enabled.

I am running VirtualBox 5.0.20 (r106931) with Guest Additions 5.0.20. My host system is Fedora 23.

Windows 10 is running with the most recent updates. I can confirm that the dynamic scaling on VM window resizing worked before and still works on other OS guest systems (e.g. Debian, Cent OS, ...).

Are there any known issues which will be adressed in updates in the next days or did anyone face similar problems and found a solution?

Best regards

In order to better understand the problem you need to submit some more information. Please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance.

As far as the "VBox.log.zip" goes, here's what you do:
  1. Start the VM. Not from a saved or suspended state. Clean start.
  2. Take the steps required to generate/observe the error.
  3. Shut down the VM. Not suspended, not paused. Shut down. If you can't shut it down by normal means, close the VM window and select "Power off".
  4. Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager.
  5. Select "Show Log..."
  6. Save it (just the first log, VBox.log), ZIP it and attach it in your response (see the "Upload attachment" at the bottom of the form).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Your logs seem OK, unless I missed something. There are some run-time options which do not show up in the logs or in the recipe of the VM. But, in the case that I'm missing something, would you mind posting the .VBOX file for a) your Win10 guest which doesn't work and b) another guest that does. Right-click on each of the VMs, select "Show in ...", zip and post them.

Also, please compare the "View" menu between a working VM and the non-working Win10 VM. These options are not "recorded" AFAIK.

Hi,

here are two .vbox files as attachments (the Win10 .vbox and one from a Debian VM).

Also, the settings in the "view" menu are absolute identical.

To point it out a little bit more in detail (as I believe it could be missunderstood):

Scaling of the VM window does work partially but just until some point is exceeded (which refers to the resolution of the VM window, I guess).

So the VM window simply stops scaling (I attached a screenshot to show what I mean).

In the view menu there is "automatic scaling" active and scale factor is "100". When starting up any other VM there are the absolute identical settings in the view menus and every VM window scales without problems to any resolution.

----- EDIT ------

[Solved]

I figured out the problem and actually it wasn't a problem of VirtualBox. I reinstalled the Guest Additions and after rebooting I saw in the "view" menu that there was an automatic setting which pointed to resizing after a specific resolution (this disappears after the first resize attempt).

I then opened the settings in Windows 10 and saw in the resolution settings exactly this max. resolution being set which obviously prevented the Win10 window to scale up to the VM window when exceeding the given resolution. I did set the max. resolution to the highest value and the Win10 window scales up to any resolution my monitor supports.

So, sorry for all the confusion.

P.S.: I removed the attachments in this thread.

I have only
640 x 480
800 x 600
1024 x 768
1152 x 864
1280 x 960
in Adaptor - list all modes
Monitor is generic Non-PnP

Assuming you have installed the Guest Additions:
mpack recently wrote:Usually the display size you're stuck in is the highest possible 4:3 ratio, because VirtualBox and the Window guest have gotten tied into a knot telling/asking each other only about 4:3 ratio options, because that's the size of your default virtual monitor (your actual monitor of course isn't relevant to the VM). If you shut down all VMs, then in the UI go to File|Preferences|Display and set MaxGuestDisplaySize to "None" then you should be able to select any display size you like in any VM.
