Network not working (Ubuntu Host - Windows 7 Guest ]
Ubuntu Trusty host / Seven Guest
Virtualbox 4.3.38.r106717
Hello ,
I'm quite new on this forum. I hope that you'll be able to help me.
I installed a seven workstation and it seems to work fine. After a while, I lots the connection to the host. Not sure if it cames after virtualbox guest addons installation. As I rebooted multiple times, I installed software (office, ...) So i had network and I lost it.
Driver Intel 1000 PRO MT desktop adapter tells me that it works fine, I updated it manually but it didn't change anything.
I've always a redcross on the rigth of the dektop "not connected - no connection is available"
ipconfig /all return nothing
the card itself is activated (deactivating/activating it doesn't change anything) . double clicking on it, details show nothing.
I am using the NAT option but I tried bridge network option whithout any effect.
I'm totally lost. I didn't see anything in virtualbox log,
could you help me? I'll appreciate greatly.
Regards.

Hello,
always investigating. I look around in the forums and I saw several commands that could be helpful. .. but for me not very understandable.
Some VirtualBox commands ran on host server (Ubuntu trusty):
This returns nothing. Not sure but it seems that it is the reason why I didn't get any network in my VM.
Not sure of the meaning ...
There I'm at home and I'm using Wifi to connect.
Not sure if it can be helpful this command.
Then here are the interfaces:
I uploaded also the result of showVMinfo. there is some information related to network. Is there something wrong ?
NIC 1: MAC: 0800279F994F, Attachment: NAT, Cable connected: on, Trace: off (file: none), Type: 82540EM, Reported speed: 0 Mbps, Boot priority: 0, Promisc Policy: deny, Bandwidth group: none
NIC 1 Settings: MTU: 0, Socket (send: 64, receive: 64), TCP Window (send:64, receive: 64) I'll appreciate if someone could spend some time to read these information and give me some guidelines. Do I need to upgrade to 5.0 ? will I keep my data ? will this solve the problem ?

Investigating ...
For test purpose, I created a NAT network
configuring Windows guest with NAT network and not NAT, it found natjps. But the network wasn't there in the VM.
Let me know if you have some ideas

Hello,

)
I saw in some forums that it has been found a bug related to dnsmask and virtualbox. I ran several command and it seems that I'm in the configuration where virtualbox had a bug. (I don't know if this bug always exist). Perhaps it is why windows guest doesn't work.
/etc/hosts
resolv.conf
What do you think ?

Alas,
bad news. I ran the workaround given for this issue : VBoxManage modifyvm VMNAME --natdnshostresolver1 on
and this didn't solve the issue.
I need help .

Re: Network not working (Ubuntu Host - Windows 7 Guest ]
Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.
- From the hosts terminal window type VBoxManage showvminfo <VM Name> --details and post here. Replace <VM Name> with the actual name of the VM. Use " " if the name has a space in it.
- VBoxManage list bridgedifs
VBoxManage list hostonlyifs
VBoxManage list natnets
Re: Network not working (Ubuntu Host - Windows 7 Guest ]
Thanks for the reply,
Please find them here:
VBoxManage list hostonlyifs returns empty
this nat network has been defined previously (a test done to check if something changed. Nothing in the behavior except that instead having an empty list on the command, I have this below) I gave above the commands used tto create the NAT network.
Thanks for your help.Isagarran

Re: Network not working (Ubuntu Host - Windows 7 Guest ]
Did you edit the original NAT network or did you create a new one yourself?
- Your guest settings show you are connected to NIC 1: MAC: 0800279F994F, Attachment: NAT,
But your network you created is named NetworkName: natjps
Re: Network not working (Ubuntu Host - Windows 7 Guest ]
Hello,
I did several tests. What I tried to use is a NAT configuration. It is what was working for a while and do no longer work.
As connection doesn longer work, I tried, "host only, bridge, .... " without any success. I discovered "NAT network" configuration that is a new one for me.
I found commands to create a NAT network (I posted them above in the post). I created natjps NAT network. This configuration also doesn't work.
So I go back on my original configuration which was simply "NAT" configuration
Output of command vboxmanage list natnets show the NAT network I created but I think, I do no longer use now.

Hello,
Just in order to be accurate. This is my VB guest configuration t is NAT and not "NAT network" and you can find the macaddress, you show.

Re: Network not working (Ubuntu Host - Windows 7 Guest ]
Hello,
for test purpose, I installed an old Windows XP I had. I got the network.
I did showvminfo on this VM and the only difference with Windows seven is on the IO/APIC that was off. I set them off but my Windows seven but it always not working fine from a network point of view.
Where the problem com from ? I've an error with Symantec (SEP). It can't install virus definitions but I don't think it will block the Windows seven.
Is there a way to check if the problem come from Windows itself or Virtualbox ?

Re: Network not working (Ubuntu Host - Windows 7 Guest ]
Virus software has been know to effect the network.I've an error with Symantec (SEP)
If you could think back to when the guest was working and what you installed between there and the time it stopped, I believe you will find the cause.
Also it is not a good idea to disable IO-APIC on a Windows guest after you install with it on. This can lead to a corrupt guest.
Re: Network not working (Ubuntu Host - Windows 7 Guest ]
Hello,
Yes I understand. I just build the VM, Symantec was installed just after installation (firewall, threats protect, ...) . I've an error I think due to the fact that I don't have any network
I stop Symantec process in order to be sure that it is not involved in the problem. Then I deactivated the card and activated it each time, it activates it ... it does it but just before it tells me that the cable is not connected. In the VB network configuration, I checked "cable connected" but it seems that it doesn't detect it.
