unable to use usb on Win7 guest

Dear all,

I'm using virtualbox 5.0.20 on an up-to-date Arch system (x64), installed on a Lenovo T450s. Everything works perfectly, except for USB access. Now, my laptop has only USB3 slots, and I've read that, in order to be able to use USB3 on the windows 7 guest, one has to install the Intel xHCI drivers, which I did, as can be seen in the attached screenshot of the device manager of the windows guest; furthermore, my user is in the vboxusers group, and I have selected the USB3 option in the USB settings of the VM; but, no matter which USB device I plug in, whenever I go to Devices ->USB, there is NO device shown that could be plugged in to the VM; what am I missing? :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I really need the USB access.

Kind regards,
Mat

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

Also post the results of id in a terminal on the host.

I don't see any glaring issues with the log file with the exception of it being an OSE which means a fork or custom build.

Code: Select all

VirtualBox VM 5.0.20_OSE r106931 linux.amd64 (May 1 2016 01:28:31) release log
This makes it hard to diagnose I am afraid. Did you get this install from virtualbox.org as source and build it yourself or the Arch repo?

Also post the results of the following from the hosts terminal

Code: Select all

VBoxManage list extpacks
VBoxManage list usbhost

I installed it directly from the repo using pacman. Think I should have done differently?

as for the commands:

VBoxManage list extpacks:
Extension Packs: 1
Pack no. 0: Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack
Version: 5.0.20
Revision: 106931
Edition:
Description: USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 Host Controller, Host Webcam, VirtualBox RDP, PXE ROM, Disk Encryption.
VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP
Usable: true
Why unusable:

VBoxManage list usbhost:

Host USB Devices:

<none>

Yeah we only deal with the official installs from virtualbox.org. Not that yours will not work but you would need to ask the provider ( in this case Arch ) how to proceed. We don't know what they do to the original source I am afraid before they post it for install.
