When creating a new machine the vdi file defaults to 2GB. Is there an option to choose a smaller initial size?

You can drag the slider to as low as 4 MB (VBox 5.0.20). What's the guest OS? Why do you believe that the suggested default is too much?
Be careful, because your next question might be "How do I increase the virtual HD size?"

The defaults in the VM settings are normally dictated by the guest OS version setting. If you put the correct value in this field then you should be very careful abouty overriding the default values in other fields, chosen by experts.

The size of vdi in the "creating a new machine" wizard is the
final size not the initial size. A 2GB setting will make a vdi that grows to 2GB, no bigger.
