Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Thanks. Try this: shut down (not suspend) the guest OS. In the GUI, go to File|Preferences|Display|MaxGuestScreenSize and set it to None. Restart the guest and test different guest window sizes. Leave fullscreen mode for last.

We may also have to wait for a Linux Hosts expert to comment on whether your host desktop UI is best for VirtualBox.

Unity is not my choice for a DT but it should work just fine. I do know that full screen has some issues lately and the screen shot looks like what some have reported. I also know that the menu bar has had its problems along the way as well. I usually disable the menu bar and use the host+home to bring up a manual menu. I could go into why all of this is but it will not change the outcome and happens because everyone is changing the way the DT is being drawn. ( like Xorg, MIR, GTK, Etc.. )

I found that it works great if I move the menu bar to the top of the fullscreen area. Down at the bottom it has nasty interactions with the taskbar of my windows host.

Yes that was one of the issues on a Windows host. Then there is the one about pixel detect. IMHO the menu bar was a nasty hack and one that just caused me issues. In years of use they have fixed it and it breaks again, then after a while they fix it and the revolving door starts again. Since host+home opens the same basic functions I decided a long time ago to just give it up and use what works.

Hello,

Mpack, how did you moved the menubar from the bottom to the top of the fullscreen area?

In VirtualBox 5.0.20, go to VM settings, User Interface panel (bottom of list on left panel), in Mini Toolbar settings tick "Show at Top of Screen".
