Suddenly, vbox kills mouse/keyboard?

Up until two or three days ago, vbox was running fine on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) with WinXP as the guest OS. However, every time I try to run the guest since then, I lose total control of any input device. No keyboard response, no mouse response. This seems to have happened after the most recent update to the Ubuntu host (Gnome), but that could be just happenstance. There was also an automatic - kinda, since I watch those - Microsoft update to WinXP, so I don't really know whether the cause was the Ubuntu update or the Win update or a combination of the two.
Anyone have a suggestion as to how to overcome this disfunctionality?
