"[Game] encountered a problem and needs to close"

Hi.
I am trying to resurrect a couple of old games.
I am running a host on Windows 10 and guest is Windows XP SP3.
I have tried a few old games and all have the same error - which is they install apparently properly but then fail with the encountered a problem error message,
As I said I have tried a few games all of which are original games from my childhood with original disks that appear to be in good condition. They all ran under windows XP when they were new. Of the games I have tried Worms World Party appears in the list of working games on this site so I am trying to get that one working first but I assume the its the same issue on all of them.
I have tried the following.
Installed and run on a clean new XP SP3 install
Again with guest additions installed in safe mode
with both 2d and 3d acceleration enabled and disabled.
Tried all of the above with a Windows 98SE guest - the wording of the error message is obviously different but it happens at the same point.
I am now out of ideas all help appreciated. Please bear in mind that I am new to Virtual box so keep answers simple if possible.
