Critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine

Hi guys,
I'm facing a weird problem when trying to run a VM from the OpenFlow tutorial: github[dot]com/mininet/openflow-tutorial/wiki/Installing-Required-Software

The VM is basically Ubuntu with some software pre-installed and normally Ubuntu works fine in VirtualBox. I'm running it right now actually. Yet this VM just won't start (in both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions on two different PCs!). I get the following error:
"A critical error has occurred while running the virtual machine and the machine execution has been stopped."

My VirtualBox is running on a Windows 10 64bit PC and on a Surface Pro 4. I get the error on both of those PCs. I'm running the current version of VirtualBox (5.0.18 r106667).

I would be really thankful if you could help me as I have to solve a task using this VM within the next two weeks.
