VM Aborts when switching to seamless mode

I am using Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon edition, fully updated and a Linux Mint 17.3 VM, also Cinnamon edition. The proprietary NVida drivers (current version from the repository - 352.63) are in use. The host has a GeForce GTX 670 installed.

If I disable 3D, no problems appear to occur and seamless mode appears to operate. This, however, causes the guest OS to render in software mode, which I imagine is less efficient. Once 3D acceleration is enabled, switching to seamless mode causes the guest to immediately show as "Aborted" in the Virtualbox UI.

The host has 3 monitors and the VM is being displayed on just one of the monitors.

I have cut out the rest of the log for brevity, but can include more if anything relevant is missing. I am assuming that a code assertion may be failing and causing the crash, but there is nothing in the log (what is above does include the end of the log) to explain in more detail. Any ideas?

I note the first line shows:

Which would imply that seamless mode is not supported. It would be good to know why this is the case, but even so the VM should not crash when seamless mode is enabled.

12MB is rather a small amount of graphics RAM. Surely VirtualBox is giving you warnings about this in the settings dialogs?

12MB may not be enough to handle seamless or fullscreen graphics modes. ISTM that on a host with 30GB available RAM you can easily afford 256MB simulated VRAM for the guest, plus one or two GBs RAM for the guest OS.

If you still get problems then the next thing to try is to disable 3D acceleration.

Thanks for the response.

Without 3d acceleration it works fine (as mentioned in the initial post). I tried a number of settings, peaking at the maximum 128MB and it survives the transition into seamless mode a little longer, but fails when switched back. In case there is additional information, I have attached the most recent log.

128MB is probably fine, but the trick for getting 256MB is to select two monitors, select 256MB, then switch back to one monitor.

As to the crash: the likely options were bug in host OpenGL drivers, or insufficient RAM (the crash is also a bug, but a reasonable one: nobody expects a modern graphics card to have 12MB VRAM). If we now exclude VRAM as the (sole) explanation then we're left with buggy host drivers. You might want to check for updates to the latter.

Setting 2 monitors does not let me increase the RAM beyond 128MB. I have taken a look at the drivers in use on the Linux VM and for some reason it looks as though version 4 drivers are currently active, even though the latest guest utilities were installed (the ones matching the installation of Virtualbox). I am going to look into why this is the case, as I imagine the difference in version numbers is more likely to be the cause of issues.

Will update this post once I have checked.

I referred to host graphics drivers, not guest drivers. The guest drivers are provided by the GAs.

Yes, I appreciate that. However, if for some reason the VM is using mismatched or out-of-date drivers I would imagine it could also cause a problem. I am going to check what version drivers are actually installed and operational before I go any further.

Having checked again, the drivers do appear to be current so it is not that. I think the easiest option for what I want to achieve will be to use X11 forwarding. I have tried it and it works just fine. Waiting until either the Mint distro provides updated NVidia drivers or Virtualbox addresses the issue is not really an option, nor is using software rendering in Cinnamon.
