I am receiving a virtual box – error, that says, VT-x/AMD hardware acceleration is not available on your system. Certain guests (e.g. OS/2 and QNX) require this feature and will fail to boot without it.

In the box itself it says at the top: “Fatal: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted.”

The cursor in the box is not blinking and the box won’t allow me to do anything. I am not sure what is causing this or what I need to do to fix this. I followed the downloading instructions perfectly so I wonder if there is something about my system that is lacking that may be causing the error messages.

For this see I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests Your guest is set to use VT-x/AMD-V and the host isn't providing it. The link will point out that your BIOS and your CPU have to support this setting and the BIOS has to have the setting turned on. You will need to research your CPU and BIOS for availability of this setting and how to turn it on.

This means the guest did start up, went through the BIOS, then looked for a bootable disk and couldn't find one.

What instructions, for what software?

So I need to save Ubuntu, for example, to a disk or USB and then virtual box will have something to boot from? Is that correct. Thanks.

The process for installing a guest in the VM is the same as for a physical piece of hardware. In the case of Ubuntu you will either need an .iso file containing a live image that the VM can boot from or an Ubuntu install CD of some description (full DVD, netinstall, etc.) and create a VM with a virtual hard disk and install Ubuntu into that.

Andy's recommendation of an ISO is the exact thing you'd need for Virtualbox. The guest's virtual CD drive can be pointed to the ISO file itself, no need for an actual burned CD. BTW, Virtualbox does not yet support booting a guest from a USB drive, though some folks on the web report having used raw access to do it. A downloaded ISO is easiest.

When my virtualbox first loads and I see the screen I see a message that says, "Failed to locate at CPU 0" Can someone tells me what this means? Thanks.

Google can't find that phrase on the Virtualbox forums. Did you type it exactly?
Post a log after that error occurs, please.
