Upgrade to VBox and Guest Add. 5.0.17 broke USB in guests

I had VBox and guest additions 5.0.16 on an Ubuntu 15.10 host with Win10, Centos 7, and openSUSE Tumbleweed guests. Win10 and Centos have been up a for a while and have been working perfectly but opensuse tumbleweed was new and I was having difficulty getting 3d acceleration working (Tumbleweed). I upgraded to 5.0.17 on advise from someone else to correct this (which was successful by the way in supporting 3d acceleration in the opensuse tumbleweed guest) and now I get the following message when trying to launch any of these guests with USB 2.0 support:
I did of course install guest additions 5.0.17 in all of these guests to no avail. Though not critical for the linux guests the only reason I need windoze is for a couple of proprietary USB devices that are not worth having a separate win machine but still important. Any ideas?

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine win10pro64. (or centos or opensuse)
Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found!
Because the USB 2.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started. To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 2.0 support in the VM settings.
Note! This error could also mean that an incompatible version of the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' is installed (VERR_NOT_FOUND).
