Can't install Extensions

The version of VBox I am using is: 5.0.2 r102096, this is the one that I installed using the "built-in" Software Manager. My OS is Linux Mint 17.3 (Rosa).
I was able to install the Guest Additions with no problem, but I cannot get the Extension Pack installed so I can access USB devices.
I downloaded the matching Extension Pack package and extracted the files but running File/Preferences.../Extensions there isn't any file that is "recognized".
If I download/extract the package for version 5.0.16-105871 that does give a file that is recognized but if I use that one instead I get a "wrong version" error which is understandable. How can I get the one I need?
I even tried re-installing the whole VBox system using 5.0.16 at the command prompt but that version can't be installed due to dependency issue errors.
Anyone have an answer for me? Thanks!

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

VirtualBox VM 5.0.2 r102096 linux.amd64 (Aug 13 2015 16:42:27) release log
00:00:00.454771 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 5.0.16 r105871; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)

The versions must match, so either upgrade the Installed version of VirtualBox or downgrade the Extension Pack.
Also make sure that your user ( on the host ) is in the vboxusers group of the host followed with a reboot.

Thank you for helping me, but yes, I already know all of this. As my original post said I was not surprised that the version unmatch was a problem. Now if I can download the 5.0.16 version and extract it to produce a "recognizable" file why can't I do this for a 5.0.2 version? As my post said I downloaded the "correct" one but on extraction there is not a file like this one: "Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.0.16-105871.vbox-extpack". That one even has the little VBox icon showing at the beginning of the listing. Where can I get the one I need? That was my question. Also, I had already taken care of the vboxusers group setting.

There is no extraction involved. The ExtPack is installed via the VirtualBox main manager under preferences -> ExtPack or by the command line using VBox Manage ( see manual ) for the procedure.
Same with the main program. It be a .deb or .rpm file depending on the host OS and is installed using a package manager like gdebi or dpkg.

I suggest that you upgrade the main program to 5.0.16 and then install the ExtPack again using the proper method.

When I said: "I even tried re-installing the whole VBox system using 5.0.16 at the command prompt but that version can't be installed due to dependency issue errors." I meant that the .deb package for version 5.0.16 could not be used as the error message attached shows.

And what is the package manager you used? Was it the default that comes with the OS?
Have you tried installing and using gdebi or dpkg as I suggested?
Have you also tried to update the host so the packages are updated to be able to install 5.0.16?
What about installing libdevmapper1.02.90?

Yes, the Software Manager comes with Linux Mint.
I was successful by running "sudo apt install virtualbox-5.0" at the Terminal. Now I have 5.0.16 and the Extension Pack "took".
Thanks for your help. BTW, I have USB-3 running so I can communicate via that method which got me started on all this.

Be careful and look at the top of the log file. If it says OSE then we don't support that. Apt usually brings in the repo fork and they are responsible for that support.

I didn't see "OSE" but here's the log file. Please let me know if I'm "safe".
