Windows freezes after attaching USB flash drive

Hi all,
My Windows 7 guest freezes after I attach a USB flash drive. I cannot even do ACPI shutdown, I have to power off the machine.
As I have read there were issues with VB v.4 that were fixed in later releases. Does anyone else has experienced this issue with VB v.5?
Are there any solutions?
My configuration is this:
VirtualBox Version 5.0.16 r105871
Host: Linux Mint 17.3 x64
Guest: Windows 7 x64
Of course Guest additions and extension pack are already installed and the user is already vboxusers group member.
Thanks in advance!

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

Perryg thanks for the quick response. There were 4 logs. I have attached all of them as a zip file.
BTW I have tried to drag n drop from host to guest but that didn't work either.

You are assigning all of your physical cores to the guest and should leave at least one for the host.
Code: Select all
00:00:00.496856 NumCPUs <integer> = 0x0000000000000004 (4)
00:00:00.860928 CPUM: Logical host processors: 8 present, 8 max, 8 online, online mask: 00000000000000ff
00:00:00.861099 CPUM: Physical host cores: 4
You are using USB2 which is fine but are you sure you are not using a USB3 port on the host?
Code: Select all
02:09:04.215308 EHCI: USB Operational
Also make sure that your user name in in the vboxusers group on the host.
I can't help you with drag and drop. I do not use drag and drop because I see it as a security issue and shared folders work for me without any issues.

Perryg thanks again for the quick response.
My PC has 8 cores of which I have assigned 4 cores to this machine (see attached snapshot). Why "Physical host cores: 4"?
I tried USB3 in the beginning but the machine couldn't start at all - I got an error. My PC has indeed 1 or 2 USB3 ports and the errors come when I use the USB2 ports.
I don't know if it is related but the machine was before in OpenSuse 13.2 host and in VB 4.3x. As I mentioned before I'm using now the machine with Mint 17.3 and VB 5.0.16. Since I am using the same home partition VB took over the existing settings. Of course guest additions and extension pack are updated to the v.5.

How strange. Intel seems to believe that
your CPU has 4 cores. Perhaps you are correct, and both Perry and Intel are wrong.

@mpack: you could help without being sarcastic. This is not the right behavior particularly from a site moderator.
All my tools were reporting 8 CPUs like this from lscpu (including my BIOS):
Architecture: x86_64
CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit, 64-bit
Byte Order: Little Endian
CPU(s): 8
On-line CPU(s) list: 0-7
Thread(s) per core: 2
Core(s) per socket: 4
Socket(s): 1
NUMA node(s): 1
Vendor ID: GenuineIntel
CPU family: 6
Model: 42
Stepping: 7
CPU MHz: 3635.742
BogoMIPS: 6822.21
Virtualization: VT-x
L1d cache: 32K
L1i cache: 32K
L2 cache: 256K
L3 cache: 8192K
NUMA node0 CPU(s): 0-7
I thought these are supposed to be 8 cores. The reality is my PC has only 4 physical cores.

I was running 2 guests assigned to 2 CPUs each sometimes simultaneously. This seems to be the cause of the freeze and the issues I had with the shared clipboard. Like Perryg mentioned 1 physical core must be free for the host alone.

You are correct, I apologise. I am exasperated that people rarely bother to read the previous zillion posts where the difference between cores and threads has been patiently explained, then to rub it in they contradict you when the advice is briefly given again.
Your tool output is still wrong btw. Your PC has 1 CPU containing 4 cores, 8 threads.
