Connecting guest to host

Post by Lappert »

I'm running VB 5.0.16 with Kubuntu 5.10 as my host and a Windows 7 guest.

This is on a re-install where the previous install (using VB 4.x) seemed to work fine. At this point it seems VB is running fine and I can use various apps.

I want to connect the host and guest using FTP/SFTP - and the reverse. Previously I had used Total Commander (on the Win7 guest) for the FTP connection. Worked well.

Going the other way I used a similar FTP setup in Krusader on the host to connect to the Win7 guest. I do not (yet) have SSH installed - and I don't recall if I had it installed previosly. But even so, shouldn't FTP work? And AFAIK I don't have any FTP/SFTP server daemons running. Necessary?

None of the IP numbers seem to work. Running ipconfig on the windows 7 guest, I get:
Windows IP Configuration

And running netstat-rn on the Kubuntu host, I get:

I am not verey good with network configs and get lost on this subject, so any help will be appreciated. Thank you

Set one of the NICs in the guest to host only. It should then get a 192.168.56.x IP and be able to communicate with the host's host only adapter (192.168.56.1).

Bill, thanks for your reply.

Please assume I know nothing about networks (it's almost true). The guest is Win7-32. Where and how would I set the NIC to "host only" And isn't a NIC the hardware card?

I can tell you that on the previous install we didn't have to do that. And I don't see anywhere in the netstat -rn result an IP of 192.168.56.1. Where do you get that?

Thanks

In the settings of the vm. (Settings then Network). You can configure up to 4 NICs per vm. Setting one to the default(NAT) and one to host only should do what you want.

By default the settings will be one NIC only enabled and it will be set to NAT.

Thanks,

So I go to Settings > Network.

Only Adapter 1 and 2 can be configured. Both enabled.

Adapter 1
attached to: NAT
no name
Adapter type: Intel Pro/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)
Promiscuous Mode: Deny
MAC address: 080027F91E5A
Cable Connected
No Port Forwarding

Adapter 2
attached to: Bridged Adapter
name: eno1
Adapter type: Intel Pro/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)
Promiscuous Mode: Deny
MAC address: 080027E0E63B
Cable Connected
No Port Forwarding

I tried to switch Adapter 2 to Host-Only Adapter, but got a message that "Invalid Settings Detected"
There's no indication of any IP change.

I would disable NIC2 and set NIC3 to host only.

How did you install this vm? Setting NIC2 to bridged would not have happened by default. And if bridged was working, you should have been able to see the guest from the host already.
