Discard saved state menu is disabled on a saved VM

Post by Potup Turnoff »

Hi all,

Had an OS failure and had to reinstall Fedora 19. Installed VirtualBox-5.0-5.0.16_105871_fedora18-1.x86_64 after that. One of the VMs was in a saved state and I cannot restart it as Discard Saved State menu option is disabled. Getting the following error:

Code: Select all

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows98.

The VM session was aborted.

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: SessionMachine
Interface: ISession {7844aa05-b02e-4cdd-a04f-ade4a762e6b7}
How can I discard the saved state and repair the machine? It is required for running a very old unique piece of software that does not work under anything but Win98.

Thank you for your help!

I tried deleting the machine w/o deleting all files, and now I cannot re-create it, as the error says

Code: Select all

Cannot create the machine folder Windows98 in the parent folder /home/user0/VirtualBox VMs

This folder already exists and possibly belongs to another machine
Is it absolutely necessary to make VB so inflexible and restrictive, that it is nearly impossible to deal with as soon as any minor issue happens?
What benefits other than RPITA do these restrictions w/o any possibility of overriding them provide to the users???

Okay, the directory exists, so what on Earth is preventing VB from going ahead and using it anyway should the user want to do so? You are providing the software as is without any warranty anyway, so being restrictive kind of does not make sense achieving nothing but wasting the user's time and bandwidth from having to come onto these forums, post questions and wait for the answers that may never come. Huh?

Okay, I moved the VDI to another location and deleted Windows98 sub-directory.
Now I cannot use the VDI file because of this:

Code: Select all

Failed to open the disk image file /FileDump1TB/Windows98.vdi.

Cannot register the hard disk '/FileDump1TB/Windows98.vdi' {0ea818bd-9fae-40fe-bbff-bbfd7bee3978} because a hard disk '/home/user0/VirtualBox VMs/Windows98/Windows98.vdi' with UUID {0ea818bd-9fae-40fe-bbff-bbfd7bee3978} already exists.

Result Code: NS_ERROR_INVALID_ARG (0x80070057)
Component: VirtualBoxWrap
Interface: IVirtualBox {0169423f-46b4-cde9-91af-1e9d5b6cd945}
Callee RC: VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80BB0001)
This is amounting to torture. What's the problem, why are you doing this to me?

To discard a saved state: right click VM and select "Discard saved state". If this option is disabled then the VM doesn't have a saved state. What makes you think otherwise?

I won't comment on your other problems until you describe it better, and without the hyperbole: keep your question simple and direct.

I'm not sure what you hoped to achieve by unregistering the VM, but the proper way to re-register it is using "Machine|Add...". If you want to create a new VM with the same name then move the old VM folder somewhere else. And incidentally: your host OS does not allow two folders with the same name in one parent folder, so this is not VirtualBox being fussy, it's VirtualBox trying to prevent you from destroying all your data. Lots of people are fussy about that sort of thing.

Who said that VB had to create a folder with the same name as existing???
I asked you: why is it not able to re-use an existing folder?
You do provide two modes for creating a VM: guided and expert. Why not going one step forward and not treating an expert like in a guided mode??? All these restrictions are simply made up and nothing but extra pain. This forum is a proof: whenever anyone complains of loss of data, your own response is to have a backup. So quit pretending that you care about protecting user's data.

"I" do nothing of the sort. I am a user, not a developer (at least not of VirtualBox). If you are interested in my help then ask a question, but if all you want to do is complain and cast blame then I have no interest in reading your posts.

I should warn you that people here volunteer their time and are under no obligation to help you. If this combative attitude is typical of your usual interaction then I don't expect you will get much help here.
