Hi all,

I`m new to Linux as well as Virtualbox. I mainly got Virtualbox to run AutoCAD on. This was working fine for a number of weeks and then suddenly I got an error message: "Failed to create the VirtualBoxClient COM object.
The application will now terminate."

On the terminal window it displays: (VirtualBox:3068): Gtk-CRITICAL **: IA__gtk_widget_get_direction: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed

It actually shows this under the details: NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED (0x80040154)

I really need this working and cant understand what is wrong with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Mackers

Post the guests log file ( as an attachment ). Right click on the guest in the Main Manager then click show log. Save and post as an attachment. Compress if it is too large to post.

This log is from Feb so it is quite old. What has changed on the host since the last time it worked?

You can try removing and install VirtualBox again. If the kernel was updated on the host it may be causing this issue.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes it is quite old but I`ve been very busy and this is the first I`ve got around to getting it sorted so that is the last time I used it. I`ve tried uninstalling before but it didnt work. How do I ensure it has uninstalled everything? Sorry but I`m very new to all this and just learning.

Depends on how familiar you are with your Linux host. I use the terminal and remove from there but people that are new to Linux find it easier to use aptitude or synaptic and search for VirtualBox and remove it with that. Just to be clear the com server error is usually caused by the host not being able to load the VirtualBox packages and needs to be fixed on the host system. Make sure that your host is up-to-date with its other packages and then try to uninstall and then install again.

Thanks very much guys, got it working again.

I unhid all the folders and went into .config/virtualbox and deleted the folder. Then uninstalled everything Virtualbox related. Just did a fresh install and I`m up and going again!!! Thanks for the help. I`ll make sure I keep in touch here as its so useful.
