Virtualbox 1.62 under Kubuntu 8.04 crashes

Post by Technowizard »

It happens time I try to start some OS like Fedora 9, Free-BSD or PCLinuxOS MiniMe as a guest. The Fedora 9 installation for example crashes while formating the file system. Does anybody have a solution for this?

are you getting segmentation faults?

Segmentation Faults

I'm getting segmentation faults a lot on my system. I was getting them on a different machine running Fedora 8, so I decided to try on a new machine. (Note both these machines are HP desktops, I would have to dig deeper to get the actual hardware specs)

Currently I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with VB 1.6.2. I have tried reinstalling a few times, but still the same. Setting up the machine I did the following:

-in bios turned on cpu virtualization
-instaleld ubuntu, did an apt-get upgrade to install all the latest packages
-installed vsftpd
-installed vb and all its dependencies, vb from the 1.6.2 .deb file and the dependencies from the repositories
-copied over my windows 2003 iso file
-created a virtual machine with a 15gb vdi file
-installed windows

When do crashes happen?
-crashes happen all the time while installing software, currently im trying to do the windows updates, every time i get to the screen that asks if I want IE 7, I press no and will receive the fault 1-2 seconds after that
-installing other software will cause this to happen as well
-I left the machine on over night doing nothing, and when I came in, in the morning it was still up
-if I copy and paste large 1 gb files to the machine from the machine, or from a network share, then the machine stays up

Current PC hardware:
Ubuntu 8.0.4 Server with no GUI
2 GB RAM
160 GB SATA hard drive
Intel Pro 1GB NIC
Intel Core2 Duo CPU

(I am using no GUI at all, all VBoxManage and VBoxHEadless)

VB Guest Settings:
Windows 2003 SP2
1 GB of Ram(started at 512, 768, then 1 GB)
CPU Virtualization is set on in the guest, the same occurs if I turn it off
I have changed almost every setting I can, different NIC types etc.
The next thing I will look into doing is seeing if I can emulate a different chipset

Note: The first time I set up my machine and installed everything cpu virtualization was disabled in the bios and the same occured. I then enabled and reinstalled the OS etc.
