Fortigate VM error

Post by Armand Lee »

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here so bear with me. I am having issues when importing Fortigate VM on Vbox. I'm not sure if there is a problem with the version or Vbox is just not really accepting Fortigate VMs. Can someone help me on this.. Please..

Thank you.

See Minimal information needed to be able to help
Also, a link to the Fortigate VM website, in an attached text file if you can't post links yet.

Please pick one VM, and post the VM log file for it. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

The log shows boot up to 3 seconds then a jump to 8 mins 51 secs with a GUI request to shut down. No errors that I can see.
I'd say you need to take this up with the Fortigate folks.

A couple of things that I couldn't figure out/have questions about:
  • You can't download a demo without registering. No gonna happen.
  • They don't mention what their VM's OS is based upon. At least I couldn't find it.
  • From their website:
FortiGate-VM virtual appliance is ideal for monitoring and enforcing virtual traffic on leading virtualization, cloud, and SDN platforms including VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, Xen, KVM, and AWS.
    I don't see VirtualBox listed.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Walking dead-thread, maybe?

Leo.Aslan's first log shows the same as before, booting until about 6 seconds, then dropping off into Narnia until almost 9 minutes-ish, then a request to turn off.

A google search "fortigate vm on virtualbox" leads to a reddit post https://www.reddit.com/r/fortinet/comme ... irtualbox/:
u/devdacool wrote:I did have to take a little bit of a round about way to get a FortiGate VM to even boot in VirtualBox. I had to download the OpenXen VM version to get the qcow2 file format then use the qemu-img Linux utility to convert it to a vmdk file (or VDI), which I could then boot from successfully.
If there are any errors that appear, then please post them as text (copy the text, or re-type what the picture says). Otherwise, if the OS starts booting then sits there doing nothing, I'd say the usual offering from Fortigate isn't compatible with Virtualbox and you will have to try u/devdacool's process.

FortiGate VM issues in VirtualBox are usually related to either nested virtualization settings or incompatible VM configuration. FortiGate images are quite sensitive to CPU and network adapter settings, so even small mismatches can cause boot or runtime errors.

A few things worth checking:

Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging in BIOS and VirtualBox settings
Ensure the VM is set to Paravirtualization: KVM (if applicable)
Use the correct network adapter type (commonly Intel PRO/1000) instead of generic adapters
Allocate sufficient resources (at least 2 CPU cores and 2–4GB RAM depending on version)
If possible, try running the same FortiGate VM in EVE-NG or VMware, as Fortinet images tend to be more stable there than VirtualBox

Also, matching the FortiOS image version with the supported virtualization platform makes a big difference in stability.
