Has anyone been able to get 'RedHat 5.2 Deluxe' to install? I used a Linux 2.2 profile, I started getting errors saying something like 'RPM install of [packagename] failed: package [packagename] is for a different architecture'. When I got this error a few times I fount out nothing would install and gave up. My host is Fedora Core 23 64-bit. Could this be the problem?(I need a 32-bit host?)

For installing the proper rpm, do 'uname -m' and then install the rpm which has this architecture in its name.

This command is not available during installation. The CD says it is for i386 and the box says it runs on a 386, 486, Pentium or Pentium II. Maybe it's picky about that, the question then would be how do I get VirtualBox to lie to guest and tell it I have the processer it's looking for?

What are you installing from? Do you have original CDs? Or to put it differently, how did you make sure that you have 100% undamaged installation media? I don't think RedHat 5.2 can verify the installation media like the later versions.

No it can't verify the media. I am installing from original CDs but since I bought it used I have no clue if the media is good. The disks looks clean.

Try making an ISO from the CD(s), if the CD can be read it should be error-free. Plus installing will be faster.

You do not need a 32-bit host. You might need to configure the VM differently with more (or less!) RAM and bigger (or smaller!) disk. It may also help googling for the error message because chances are you're not the first person on the planet running into it.

As I was feeling generous (read as: it is more interesting than what I am supposed to be doing) I downloaded the Red Hat 5.2 ISO and tried installing it on a Core-i7 host running 64bit Window 10 Professional.

I created a new VM using the Linux 2.2 template and made the following changes... increased system RAM to 512MB, disabled audio and USB, configured the first network adapter as PCnet-PCI II in bridged mode and let it fly...

I took all of the defaults in the Red Hat setup and configured X using SVGA as unknown card with custom monitor and it has whizzed through the install without any problems and I am sat at the terminal prompt!

What size was your virtual hard disk?.Was it a fixed disk?

Also I just remembered in the past I tried to get a older Linux distro to install I had to enable CD-ROM 'passthrough', you probably don't need this if you are using an ISO, so I will give it a try. I don't think I have time right away though. I'll report back here with my findings when I do give it a try.

UPDATE: This made no difference. Neither did using the ISO you provided... hmm...

The disk is set in the VM as a 2GB dynamic VDI file. When partitioned it was split as 1784MB as /dev/hda1 mounted at / and 128MB as /dev/hda5 set as Linux swap. The remaining space was left unused in the partitioning as I forgot that the installer on those old versions limited the swap to 128MB.

Thanks for the info, unforchantly using the same disk configuration did not help.

Update: Did some googling and all I can come up with is it seems to have an objection to certurn processors. I don't know what it's looking for but I don't have it. I could try my Virtual Machine on another computer or as a last resort install it on my Pentium 4. (which should be 'close enough' to the hardware of the time.)

Interesting. So obvious question... what exactly is your host CPU? A VBox.log would help.

And for the record, RedHat 5.2 can definitely be installed in a VM on a Core i7-2600 CPU (Sandy Bridge). My VM has 512MB RAM and a 2GB disk, using more or less defaults for installation (I went for the 'Workstation' setup).

Just to catch everyone up, andyp73 kindly sent me his VM with the OS installed. I do wonder what went wrong so I will upload a log and a YouTube video latter. I've attached my CPU info. (It comes from Linux, so it uses the Linux newlines).

UPDATE: Tried installing new packages off of the install CD-ROM using andyp73's VM but got the same error.
