USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
I have worked for three days trying everything I could read on Virtualbox and Ubuntu forums, as well as the Virtualbox user manual. Finally I have given up. Does anyone know what else to do to get USB devices available and working? Is it even possible to run VB 5.0.16 on Ubuntu Host 14.04 LTS with Windows XP Guest and get USB devices to work?
USB Devices are not showing up <no devices available> in Guest OS, even after following all the steps below...
*Host: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
*Guest: Windows XP Service Pack 3
*Virtual Box 5.0.16 AMD with Extension Pack 5.0.16 installed
*Guest Additions 5.0 installed (mouse has integrated, shared folders, scalable window working)
-Username added to vboxuser group in host terminal
-Enabled USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller in VB.
-Plugged in USB device, Host recognized it.
-Tried to add USB Device to USB Device Filters list but there are “No Devices available”.
-Tried ejecting USB device from Host to see if Guest OS would see it then, but still “No Devices Available”.
-Tried entering USB device filters manually after printing out a USB log from Host terminal. Still “No Devices Available”.
-Looked in Registry to remove upper and lower filters. They did not exist, so did not do anything.
-Guest OS USB drivers un-installed and reinstalled.
-Getting no “error” messages at all.
I have exhausted all I can find on the forums and in the user manual. Any help beyond this is much appreciated.

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
You did log out and back in (or reboot) after adding your user to the vboxusers group to activate this change?
Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
Yes. I have logged back in many times after adding virtual box users group.
Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
I will attach a log file later.
Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
Attached is the vbox log file. I don't know how to save into a zip folder, but hope this is readable. There is a log file for vbox 1, vbox 2, and vbox 3.

Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
You say "no devices available", but it isn't clear to me that you tried more than one device.
What is the USB device you do refer to? And is the host port USB2 or USB3?

Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
I had exactly the same problem - Ubuntu 15.10 host, Windows 7 guest.
Update to VB 5.0.16 and USB through connection stopped working.
Found that the update had removed me from the vboxusers group.
sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers accountname
Log out & in and all started working again.

Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
I cannot imagine how this should happen. The VirtualBox package installers don't mess with any user account. The only group-related action done by the installer is to create the 'vboxusers' group -- if it was not there before. That group is never removed and the installer would also not know which account to fiddle with. Remember, the installer runs only as root, otherwise it cannot install the package into system directories.MOWood wrote:I had exactly the same problem - Ubuntu 15.10 host, Windows 7 guest.

Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
I have also same problem with Virtualbox 5.0.16. It's definitely regression, USB devices has been showed up to Windows clients and worked flawlessly until 5.0.16.
My setup is Ubuntu 14.04 (with mainline kernel 4.4.5) as host with several Windows clients (7, Server 2008, 10) running. After upgrading VirtualBox version 5.0.16 none of the Windows clients can see any USB devices attached. There are many USB devices present all the time at the host ports. I have explicitly attached/reattached several USB devices with USB filter set to certain hosts, but no success.
I am still in the vboxusers group after 5.0.14 --> 5.0.16 upgrade, no problem with that.
I remember to have read (but didn't find that post now) that someone has been reporting problems with VB 5.0.16 & USB, in that thread (if I remember right) one common factor was hosts using Asus motherboards. My system is built on Asus P8Z77-LX.

Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
Hi,
I encountered the same issue with usb devices and a Ms Windows 7 guest.
Host OS: Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS
Host CPU: AMD A8-5600K APU
Host motherboard: Asus F2A85-M AMD A85X
Temporarily I reverted back to VirtualBox v5.0.14 from VirtualBox v5.0.16.
Cheers,
L

Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
Unfortunately, there are bug in the 5.0.14 with W10 clients. The VBOX -display driver will be crashing every now and then with W10 client dropping to ~VGA~ mode preventing me to downgrade
Build 5.0.16 overall works just fine (with some very random Guru Meditations with W10 Redstone, what else to expect with Insider Preview), but this USB issue is very major regression...

Re: USB no devices available on Linux host VB 5.0.16
I encountered the same issue with 5.0.20 on a new laptop.
Downgrade to 5.0.14 returned functionality to USB devices, etc.
