VBox freezes at Starting Virtual Machine 0%

On Arch Linux I run the latest Virtualbox. However, since some time I cannot start any VM because it get stuck at this very first stage.
If I remove ALL HDDs and Optical drives, so that the machine has NONE, it will start (but obviously get stuck at "Fatal error, could not read from boot medium").
it doesn't matter whether it is a new machine or a pre-existing one - the same symptoms.
Log shows absolutely nothing.
