Previously I was running a Windows 7 Virtual Machine on an Kubuntu 14.04 box and using VirtualBox 4.3.34_Ubuntu r104062.

I've set up a new box running Kubuntu 15.10 and installed VirtBox 5.0.14_Ubuntu r105127.

I tried to add the old VM and I've gotten the error message, "Failed to open VM located in ____"

A bit confused here. In reply to my post above, I received an email from the admin approving the topic. But then a minute later I received another email from the admin disapproving it, stating "The reported message does not fit into any other category, please use the further information field."

I have no idea what that means or what a "further information field" is.

I can appreciate the problem of many people all asking essentially the same question. I also run a phpBB-based "help" forum. I try to nudge people a bit more in the right direction or even giving the location of a more comprehensive post. We even developed a Reference board where collections of solutions are kept. Saves a lot of problems with newbies.

I also went back five pages looking for anything similar that might have helped me along. Can't find anything. To be honest, I can't even find a log file. I looked at /var/log and also at /home/user/.config/.virtualbox. Nothing.

The second email was because you submitted two times on your first post. Since the first post of any user must be approved for reasons of stopping spambots from posting, you will see this issue if you post again before you are approved.

Now to your issue. It is hard to say without diagnostic information but it sounds like you have not properly installed VirtualBox. Post the exact name of the install file and also look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to see if there are errors.

5.0.14-dfsg-0ubuntu1.15.10.1 is the ubuntu fork and not supported here. You have an option to remove theirs and install the official version from virtualbox.org or approach them for your support.
