Solved - Guest Randomly Crashing/Closing

Post by jharder01 »

Edit: Whatever the problem was is fixed in VirtualBox version 5.0.16 r105871.

Hello!
I'm having some trouble that I'm not sure where to start on... I'm going to try spilling and organizing all the info I can think of and see if someone smarter than I can help me get to the bottom of the trouble I've been having lately.

Issue: At (seemingly) random times guest will crash/close unexpectedly. No warning is given however it almost always happens when I am clicking the mouse in the guest OS. Guest OS doesn't hesitate or show a GUI error, the Guest OS windows just close and the OS is listed as "Aborted" within the Virtualbox Manager window. I'm not sure if the problem is Linux, Virtualbox, or the Guest OS. The log file Virtualbox created is attached (had to zip to keep under attachment limits).

Host OS Info:
  • Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon x64
  • Cinnamon 2.8.6
  • Linux kernel - 3.19.0-32generic
  • VirtualBox Version 5.0.14 r105127

Guest OS Info:
  • Windows 8.1 updated (Windows Updates) as of 3/1
  • Virtualbox Additions installed - Version 5.0.14
Other information (not sure if it's relevant). Over the last year or so this Guest VM has been utilized across a few different host PC's/OS's and generally hasn't given me any trouble. I just moved to Linux Mint as a host OS as I wasn't having good luck with Windows 10 and haven't been on a Linux host in quite some time. I utilize the VM as my work computer so I can use my personal hardware for work while keeping data segregated.

Thanks for taking some time to help me out!

To debug this problem we would need a core dump. Also it could make sense to try your VM with 3D disabled in the VM settings. Does your VM process crash in that case as well?

Frank, thanks for the response and a I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. Late last week I received an automatic update to Version 5.0.16 r105871. I installed this update as well as the corresponding VB Tools on the guest.

Since this update, I've been cranking on this VM for 9 - 10 hours a day without a hiccup. It would appear this last update resolved my issue.
