internet is not working

Post by abj »

I installed ORHEL 6.5 in Virtual box 4.5. I chose bridge only network adopter and then setup manual ip to connect to the internet. My ip for linux guest was 192.168.1.15 and default gateway 192.168.1.1. The internet was working well for few days and then suddenly i cannot connect to the internet. It happened to me serveral time for the last few months. I kept installing linux in virtual box and setting up manual ip but still it is not working. Can you guys tell me why it is like that? My laptop has windows 2012 installed.

There is no such thing as "Bridged only". There is Bridged, and there is Host-Only. The latter cannot be used to connect to the Internet, so it is necessary to be sure about which one you are using. Since it works sometimes I'm going to assume that you meant Bridged.

Ok, so why do you think this is a VirtualBox problem?

Mpack,
Thanks for your response. Sorry for my wordings, yes it is bridged network. I do not know why it is keep doing it. I altered the adopter and try to do different trouble shooting but it is still having the same problem. Please help if you know any trouble shooting process.

Well, I still want to know why you think it's a VirtualBox problem: the exact same symptoms sometimes happen to me too, and a router reset usually cures it. However I do wonder why you are using a manual IP configuration, as that seems the most likely way to invite problems. Normally the IP assigned by your ISP would be used by a household router. That way your host PC, VMs, tablets, phones and other devices in the house can all talk to each other and the Internet via the router.

Where I am I've seen temporary dropouts caused by a Windows 8.1 tablet waking up from sleep and trying to contact Windows Update with an local IP lease that had expired and already been assigned to something else. I.e. dropouts in my case are caused by address conflicts: which I later solved by assigning the tablet a dedicated address in the router.

I diagnosed this by looking at the error logs in the router.

At least that's the way it works where I am. I don't consider myself a network expert, and certainly not an expert on how network practices vary around the world.
