Ubuntu 14.04 TLS Desktop - no shared folders

Hello,

I want to make use of shared folders but I cant get it working.

My host system is Windows 7. I have installed VirtualBox 4.3.12r93733 there.
My guest shall be Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I downloaded latest ISO from Ubuntu website (Desktop edition).
I am able to install Ubuntu and to use it basicallly.

I created a shared folder via VirtualBox Manager (from Windows host). But I cannot find it somewhere on my Ubuntu.

I consulted several sites for advice and tutorials. Nothing helped. I think I got lost.
On Windows Host I installed latest virtual box from download page: VirtualBox-5.0.14-105127-Win
On Windows Host I installed latest extension pack from the same site: Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.0.14-105127
On Ubuntu Guest I downloaded

Code: Select all

h ttp :// download.virtualbox. org/virtualbox/5.0.14/VBoxGuestAdditions_5.0.14.iso
mounted it and run

Code: Select all

sudo sh /media/dvdname/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
There was an warning that headers for the kernel are missing and that this may is a reason for failure.
But everything went fine.
Since the installation of guestAdditions auto-resize of the guest-window and the clipboard are working.

But I am not able to find the shared folder.
Do I need to mount it explicitly? How?

Hopefully someone would be able to provide further help.

still solved myself:

- I followed missleading instructions for installing guestadditions on the ubuntu guest
- I solved it by downloading the guest addition iso directly from
h ttp: //download.virtualbox. org/virtualbox/5.0.14/VBoxGuestAdditions_5.0.14.iso
- then I mounted it via desktop functionality, it was mounted under /media/<dvdname>/
- i run the the setup via

Code: Select all

sudo sh /media/<dvdname>/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
After this autoresizing of the ubuntu display resulotion when resizing the guest window and the clipboard were working great.
For the use of shared folders I needed to create a shared folder as done before via VirtualBox Manager one the Windows 7 host. There I had to define the path on the host-system and an alias name for the share.
Under Ubuntu I then just had to mount it with this command

Code: Select all

sudo mount -t vboxsf <share_name> /mnt/<share_name>
I got the mount command and further explanations from here:
h ttps: //forums.virtualbox. org/viewtopic.php?t=15868

I also put the last command into the /etc/rc.local file for auto startup so that the mount appears also after the next restart.
