Virtualbox.exe is taking up 100% of my system's memory

I am new to Virtualbox.
I downloaded version 5.0.14 and installed it on two PCs; the first running Windows 10, and the second running Windows 7. Both are 64bit operating systems.
The one on Windows 10 works perfectly, and when I load it up, it takes about 25mb of memory. However, the one on Windows 7 does not run.
When I launch virtualbox.exe, it goes from 30mb to 600mb to 2gb to 5gb to 8gb over a matter of about 30 seconds and makes my entire system unstable. What gives?

I have no idea "what gives", but I can tell you that the problem is not VirtualBox, otherwise everyone on a Win7 host (a very common host) would have seen it.
That's assuming that you have an actual problem and are not just seeing the normal result of disk caching coupled with a corrupted download.

This may be nothing, but my eyebrows raise at your choice of words here. Most people would say "when I run VirtualBox", because they would be unaware of the executable file name. The fact that
you are aware of it makes me wonder if you are doing something odd. Are you familiar with installing and running applications on Windows?

Yes, I am. I wanted to be specific with which task I was actually running so I said VirtualBox.exe - I launched it however using the Desktop icon provided by the installer.
I uninstalled that version, and downloaded version 4.3.36, and that is working without a hitch.

Please attach the VBox.log file of both VMs you are running.

Frank, if I understood correctly then no VMs are involved yet, so no VM logs. The OP mentioned installing VirtualBox on two hosts - Win10 and Win7. He mentioned problems running VirtualBox.exe on the Win7 host. Finally he is posting in "Windows Hosts", which would be a misleading choice if he wanted to discuss a VM.

Thanks mpack. I probably didn't read carefully enough. It sounds indeed like the user just starts VirtualBox.exe (not a VM, only the VM selector) and the process occupies a huge amount of memory. bp_is_the_man, can you confirm this interpretation?
