Virtual box on XP?

Dear all,
Apologies if this has been asked. I have searched (honestly) but cannot find a clear answer.

Question: Can I run VirtualBox on Windows 32bit XP? If so, what version?

I know it's almost a crazy question. Normally I'd never try, but I have a requirement that makes this need warranted.

Any ideals or links to threads that discuss this?

Many thanks in advance.

Yes, all version of VirtualBox run on an XP. Note however that support for XP hosts was officially dropped for the 5.x release. That doesn't mean it will stop working right away, it means that keeping it working will not be a dev priority.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply.

The reason I asked is because it's failing to install using version "VirtualBox-5.0.14-105127-Win.exe"

So before I started digging around for an error code, I wanted to make sure it wasn't a host OS problem. On that, is there an error log that the install creates, or a link to pre-requisites required before installation can be undertaken on XP?

Many thanks for you assistance.

Disregard my query. Without any logical reason, the install completed on the third attempt. Nothing has changed, machine (host xp box) wasn't so much as restarted or av turned off. Nothing had changed at all. It simply worked when, an hour earlier and 12 hours before that, it simply didn't... I'd be lying if I said I understood why, or if I had changed anything...

On this, for future reference note the VirtualBox, at least on Windows hosts, uses the standard Windows Installer (MSI). You can Google for how to enable MSI logging when you need it.

From what you describe, it sounds like a temporary resource problem of some kind, or maybe a network problem.

Thank you. I know how to enable msi logging, I was wondering if there was a log file the install created. I have since looked and have my answer, but all is well.

Honestly, few things computers do surprise me, but then there is this. I completely understand the logical answer - resource issue. I would hand that out to a client also under the circumstances, but I'm happy to leave it a mystery.

I now have v5 running perfectly. Minimal setup dramas. To be completely honest it was one of the easier installs to date and I now have Windows 7 running on XP and V5. I could tell you why it was needed (for a client), but you'd just laugh - as did I once off the phone :)

Cheers and thanks for your replies and advice.
