I did a clean install of Linux Mint 17.2 Mate. I then installed Virtualbox using the Package manager. I installed the extension pack and then made a new VM for a Windows 7 Professional guest. See screen shots.

The vm was set up as follows: under general: name = Win7ProVM, Type = Windows, version = windows 7 (64 bit),
Under system base memory =2048, 2 cpus. When I tried to start the vm to load windows 7, I get the following error..

I did a total sudo apt-get remove virtuualbox-5.0 and then did a sudo apt-get install virtualbox-5.0 and re-installed the extension pack and rebuilt my vm using the same settings. (I have used exactly the same settings on another installation of linux mint 17.2 and they work well.) After the re-installation and building the vm , I still get the same error message. Anybody got any ideas? :(

The problem is that you're installing the VirtualBox from the Mint/Ubuntu repositories. That's a fork, and as such, not supported here. You should get your VirtualBox and your matching Extension Pack from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

I downloaded virtualbox 5.0 from virtualbox.org. Installed it, then downloaded the extension pack. Everything went good. I then tried to start it and install Windows 7 Pro from its iso. It told me it was missing drivers. So I made another vm and installed Ubuntu 14.04 as a test to ensure that vbox is working correctly. Ubuntu installed and is working fine, so Vbox is working. Thanks for you help. We can call this solved. I'll have to solve the windows problem now.

OK, glad you got it working.
A small piece of advice for the Windows 7 problem. Stick with the suggested template defaults as suggested from the wizard, unless you know what you're doing. The "missing" drivers part tells me that you tried to change something in the "recipe".

Thanks. I'll try that. But I have used the same settings on another vm machine and they worked. I am confused, but will try anything. Thanks. Will post results.
