Hi,
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 OS (64 bit), with VirtualBox 5 installed on it, I am running Windows 7 (Professional-32 bit) as guest on it. Windows is activated. The disk is OEM type.
I have some questions regarding WIndows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 on virtualbox
1. Can Windows 10 upgrade work on Virtualbox 5.0 ? I have read the procedure for upgrading from Windows 7, however I am not sure if it can work on VirtualBox 5.0
2. I would like to format the hard disk of my computer and install Ubuntu 14.04, I have taken backups of the .vdi file of Windows 7, after formatting and installing Ubuntu 14.04, I will paste the .vdi file back, I would like to know if Windows 7 needs to be re-activated after this process ?? Does changing the OS be taken as new system by Windows ??
I have asked Windows support, they told me my version of Windows can only be activated once, changing the hard disk will be considered a new laptop, so I will not be able to activate using the same product key.
3. Are there any problems in running Windows 10 on Virtualbox 5.0 ? I had to force the install process, as suggested by another topic on this forum. But apart from this there was no mention of problems running Windows 10 on vbox 5.0
I have asked tech support for help on the above points, but they seem to have no knowledge of VirtualBox.
thanks

Re: Questions regarding Windows 10
Short answer: Yes. I don't have the links handy, but a quick search will find them easily, but if I'm not mistaken you have to uninstall the guest additions before the upgrade.arunb wrote:1. A smart move. A smarter one would be to backup the whole VM folder, which on its most basic form, besides the VDI (the virtual hard drive) includes the VM settings. Most "worrisome" (from the settings) would be the MAC of the network cards and the hardware UUID of your guest, which could trigger a Windows reactivation.arunb wrote:I have taken backups of the .vdi file of Windows 7 ... Windows 10 is a pretty new OS and a moving target one. Problems are being solved all the time. Nothing major although or show-stopper.arunb wrote:Are there any problems in running Windows 10 on Virtualbox 5.0 ?
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.
