Not at all, I have been working on this for weeks and edging closer to a solution all the time. Thanks for the pointers though.

I am very close to getting Debian to work so I added in the last part about Grub and then permissions - see everything works now up until the point where I login.

Once I am in then I get errors - and thought it might be a problem writing to the disk, which would go back to VirtualBox and possibly that I haven't got the settings correct there.

As you pointed out, this might be exactly the question at the start but it would finish out nicely. Someone else might have seen this problem before.

Thanks,
Patrick

I'm afraid it doesn't work like that. The only thing that might have anything to do with VirtualBox is the size of the virtual hard drive that you chose at the beginning and the optional software you installed. If you run out of space on your guest, VirtualBox couldn't care less, or do anything about it.

On a Debian forum perhaps?

I'll check on Debian for those errors then.

Virtual Box tells me that the size of the VDI is 8GB, but that the actual size it is using is 4.7GB - this should be enough right? If so, all is achieved from VB side and i'll mark as solved.

FWIW, 8GB is fairly small for any sort of guest but it really depends on how many applications you are going to install or how much data you save.

You almost certainly have almost half of that 8GB reserved as a swap partition.

32GB is my normal VDI max size for a 32bit OS. 64GB if I plan to install a lot of bulky apps.

Hmm... That would actually be reflected on the allocated size of the VDI, no? Which means that the 4.7GB includes the swap partition of the guest. Plus, 4 GB of a swap partition for a 768MB RAM guest (the default)? I doubt it...
