USB pass-through does not work on Win10 host and Linux guest

Post by NickB42 »

I bought a new Windows computer a few months ago. I have struggled for the last few months to get USB pass-through working. I'm running VM 5.0.14 with the extension and the guest installed. Windows 10 host, 64-bit Linux Mint 17.3 guest.

I've attached my Vbox.log and Linux dmesg logs. Linux Mint 17 and 17.3 did not have a vboxusers, so I tried to add that, but that didn't work.

My work laptop is a Windows 7 host running Linux Mint 17 and 17.3 and USB pass-through works just fine running VB 5.0.14.

Any ideas?

What is the USB device and what is the exact problem with it?

I've tried USB serial ports, USB memory sticks, and a USB WiFi device. Virtual Box "sees" the devices. I can click and select the device. I sometimes see the Windows 10 "connected" device go away and be replaced by the Virtualbox driver, but inside of Linux I can't see any devices. When I do lsusb it only lists the hubs.

Let's narrow the question to one device please.

OK. I have a Sandisk 64 GB USB Memory Stick (SanDisk Ultra Fit CZ43 64GB USB 3.0 Low-Profile Flash Drive Up To 130MB/s Read- SDCZ43-064G-G46) that will not show up in the Linux guest.

Do you only have trouble with USB3 devices, or is it USB2 devices too?

Have you created a filter for this device?

What do you get if you type :-

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage" list usbhost
Have you read this?

Thanks for the post. I've seen many like it. This is what I get when I run

Code: Select all

I then made sure I had a filter setup as seen in the attached screen capture. I then shut down VirtualBox and removed the USB device. I wanted until

Code: Select all

"C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxManage" list usbhost
indicated it was no longer attached. That took some time, close to a minute. I then started VirtualBox and started the Linux guest. When I run:

Code: Select all

lsusb -v
This is what I get without the USB device attached:

Code: Select all

So, the only USB device you are having a problem with is also the only USB 3 device in your list?

I don't know a lot about Linux guests. Does your Linux VM have native USB3 (xHCI) mass storage drivers?

Well, I'm having trouble with ALL USB devices that I plug into the external connectors. The USB hubs and pointer device are the VirtualBox's devices that do show up. Maybe VirtualBox doesn't support Skylake USB hubs.

AFAIK, it shouldn't need to. VirtualBox isn't working at a hardware level on your host, it's just intercepting messages passing through the driver stack. USB3 has a different driver stack, but otherwise the host hardware shouldn't have much influence on VirtualBox (it may have an influence on you: e.g. a USB2 hub in a USB3 host port creates additional USB2 host ports).
