Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
How exactly are you installing the Guest Additions?
Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
I tried many ways:
1.) attach "virtual CD with addons" -> with normal start
2.) as administrator
3.) with compatibility mode windows 7
4.) with compatibility mode windows 8
5.) started in safe mode
There is another "old" (not the same key as in the logfile) Vbox folder under windows/system32/DriverStore/FileRepository/vboxguest.inf and vboxvideo but I
can´t delete them due to missing system rights.

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
I asked for "exactly". Those are just chapter headings.
Have you looked at the user manual, chapter 4? It tells you how to install the GAs for Windows guests. Don't do anything that chapter 4 doesn't tell you to do. In particular I do hope you didn't download a "GAs ISO" from some random place, since the correct file is bundled with VirtualBox, and a simple menu option selects it.
I do hope all that messing with compatibility modes hasn't wrecked your chances entirely: if VBox needed a compatibility mode the manual would tell you so.

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
Sorry, you´re completely right, I checked the manual and followed the steps, but without success.
I always used the "Insert guest addons image" feature, never any other setup. The error always was the same.
I took a small video of the install process, maybe this helps?

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
"Insert Guest Additions CD", and then presumably you run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe. In fact I suggest that you use "Run as administrator" and that you run "VBoxWindowsAdditions-amd64.exe".
Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
Thanks, I tried but without luck, to be seen here

Error seems to be similar to this:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=64251
but uninstall via cmd didn´t work either

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
ok, one step closer:
I added the missing vboxguest.inf to the path where it has been missing:
c:\windows\system32\DriverStore\FileRepository
using a tool "takeOwnership" to get access to system files
Now the installation tool stops telling:
VBoxGuest.inf is been missing under
c:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox Guest Additions
BUT the file is there, I can see it

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
That report is from last year when Win10 was still in beta. Things have moved on since then. I'm not aware that many people are running 5.0.14 and having problems installing the GAs.ToPoe wrote: Error seems to be similar to this:

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
yes, thats the thread I found already - but uninstallation didn´t help.
But it seems to me that there must be the same bug, but obviously not completely fixed.
Isn´t there a tool, which completely can deinstall addons ? After uninstallation many directories and registry entries are not removed...

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
You assume it's a VirtualBox bug. It may be, it may be not. People have been reporting that it has to do with the permissions on the DriverStore directory (and therein). In fact if you search for "Could not open file C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository" you'll find that a lot of people are facing the same "bug" in actual Windows machines.ToPoe wrote:But it seems to me that there must be the same bug, but obviously not completely fixed.
But, here's something worth trying. There's been a couple of fixes in the Guest Additions and you can try the latest test build from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds and see if that works. Or not.

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
YES! The Version 5.0.15 r105410 did the job. I tested 5.0.12 without success but your hint saved my day!
Big thanks and I hope this helps every other who has trouble.
Nice weekend!

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
Nice!
The way that Windows 10 is being developed is a rolling release. The developers have to play a game of cat and mouse with the new releases. For example, I noticed that you didn't even mention the Windows 10 build, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is the latest and greatest, and the developers had to tweak something to make it work.

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
Yep. This conflation of Windows 10 builds is getting to be a PITA. It obviously can't be treated as a single entity like past Windows releases. We're going to have to start insisting on a build number - or a log file that tells us the build number.

Re: Error installing V-Box Addons
FWIW, I haven't had any problem installing the guest additions up to VB 5.0.15 in Windows 10 Insider Preview up to build 14257.
