This morning I got a kernel update for Ubuntu 14.04 to 3.19.0-49.
I could not run any of my virtual machines. To fix this I had to reinstall the .deb file for virtualbox 5.0.
Is this normal?

Re: Virual box crash with kernel update
This usually indicates you do not have dkms installed that works to keep kernel modules up to date when a new kernel is installed or that dkms if installed is not working properly.
It also depends on what VirtualBox is installed ( Repo versus official builds ).

I have dkms install for sure. It gave me a command I could run as root '/sbin/rcvboxdrv setup'Perryg wrote:This usually indicates you do not have dkms installed that works to keep kernel modules up to date when a new kernel is installed or that dkms if installed is not working properly.

It failed with the error' Bad Argument setup'
I'm running the latest linux virtualbox-5.0_5.0.14-105127~Ubuntu~trusty_amd64.deb
If I close VB and reinstall the .deb, I can get it working again.

Still you don't say if you installed from the Repo or from VirtualBox.
The bad argument is only a part of the warning and I would need to complete warning to say what it might be.

Re: Virual box crash with kernel update
I installed from virtualbox website. got the latest .deb and extensions. I did the prerequisites
sudo apt-get install dkms
I double-clicked on the .deb file downloaded from the website and installed.
then doubled clicked on the extensions and installed.
then sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers username
The only text put on the screen was ' Bad Argument setup' when I ran /sbin/rcvboxdrv setup
sudo apt-get install dkms

Re: Virual box crash with kernel update
I suspect this has to do with the change from init.d to systemv Some have a carry over of the former and it causes issues. Most find that a purge of the installed version and then install of the new version again repairs this. Your settings and guests will remain, but I always suggest a good backup is never out of order.
