folder sharing problems - Windows 7 host, Ubuntu 14.04 guest

Hello I have Ubuntu 14.04 running on VirtualBox 4.3.16 as a guest system within a windows 7 host. I am trying to share the web folder of Ubuntu:

Code: Select all

/var/www/html
to

Code: Select all

C:\shared
in Windows. I have created test.txt in the folder as an example.

I have successfully managed to install ubuntu on the virtual machine and have configured the shared folder as shown in the attachment.

I've had a look at

Code: Select all

/media/sf_shared
but nothing is in the folder. Can someone help me out?

I've spent all day searching on the web to not much success. I've installed guest additions and tried running the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo mount -t vboxsf shared /var/www/html
to which I get the error:

Code: Select all

 unknown filesystem type 'vboxsf'
After further searching I've tried running the guest additions setup and see that building the folder sharing support module fails. Trawling through various forums has led me to installing the following repositories: build-essential dkms linux-headers-generic. I then run setup again on the guest additions to not much success.

I'm very new to ubuntu, virtual machines, and file sharing and would appreciate any help. I can try to provide more information if you need it such as logs etc

I'd appreciate any help as it would make my life easier linking the folders together.

Cheers

With my Fedora linux install, I found that with my non root user that I needed to add vboxsf group to the list of group for him to have access to those folders. Fedora threw a permissions error, but I have not used Ubuntu.
