USB dongle does not connect to the VM

LMDE 2, MATE, 32bit, updated

I installed Oracle's VB 5.0.14r105127 and the extension 5.0.14r105127 for Jessie; 32bit.
GuestAddition: 4.3.20r96996

I have an XP Prof/SP3 virtual machine, which runs fine on a kubuntu and LM 17.3 KDE. (The USB stick is a hardware dongle.)

On the LMDE 2 MATE machine I cannot get the connection from the machine to the USB stick.

I am still a kind of newbie but can work a little bit with commands.

I appreciate your help a lot, because this is for me a key issue to walk away on all my PCs from Windows. This older machine runs only with LMDE MATE properly.

Thanks for your reply. I had a look at the document and it looks very interesting. i need a few days to see what I can achieve.

Just one question: I installed LM 17.3 MATE on another PC and need to install the Oracle VB there as well. Now I have the possibility to install the SW usng the Software Manager or run the installation directly from the Oracle VB homepage. Installing from Oracl VB homepage would allow me to have the latest version and I would also get the right extension.

What would you recommend and why?

Not only that. The VirtualBox version from the Software Center is "touched" by the Ubuntu folks (a.k.a. forked) and as such, it is not supported here but you'd have to seek support at the Ubuntu forums.
