Upsize graphic ram for an existing virtual appliance
Upsize graphic ram for an existing virtual appliance
Hello forum,
I've just installed a virtual appliance under VB. Now I have to size up the graphic ram for the appliance, to be able to use it in full size mode.
How can I give the appliance 128 MB graphical ram?
Is there anybody who can give me helpful hint?
TIA
Best regards,
Knowless

Re: Upsize graphic ram for an existing virtual appliance
You don't need 128MB for fullscreen. What made you think otherwise?
The only thing you need for fullscreen is to install the GAs, and have a moderate amount of VRAM - say 10 frames worth.

Shut down the guest, go to VM Settings, Display.Knowless wrote:How can I give the appliance 128 MB graphical ram?
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Thank you for your answer. But what is GA? And what is the equivalent of 10 frames worth?mpack wrote:The only thing you need for fullscreen is to install the GAs, and have a moderate amount of VRAM - say 10 frames worth.

Re: Upsize graphic ram for an existing virtual appliance
Good morning
,
I just tried to change the settings for Display, but it didn't work. The machine stays on to ask for at least 33 MB VRAM for displaying a full szize mode.
Otherwhere I've read something, that I have to change settings in a file ending at .vbox . But in the appliance I can't find such a file. Is there anybody whol knows where I should change this settings?
TIA
Best regards,
Knowless

What exactly didn't work? Can you give more details?Knowless wrote:I just tried to change the settings for Display, but it didn't work.
Don't mess with things you don't understand. Yet...Knowless wrote:Otherwhere I've read something, that I have to change settings in a file ending at .vbox .

Re: Upsize graphic ram for an existing virtual appliance
Hi socratis,
"it doesn't" work means in this case, that the size of the presented VM is so small, that I can't read there anything. It's perhaps so small like the monitor of an old style cellphone. That's my problem. And I hope to solve the problem with an change in a config-file, because VB asks me to give it at least 33 MB of VRAM.
TIA

Re: Upsize graphic ram for an existing virtual appliance
I'm not sure I understand again what exactly you're talking about. Are you referring to the resolution of the guest OS screen? So far, you've talked about the need to increase VRAM because you want to go FullScreen, without having installed the Guest Additions (GAs, look at the manual for help) and you want to change the configuration file by hand!!!Knowless wrote:the size of the presented VM is so small, that I can't read there anything.
OK, we need to take a step back. In order to better understand the problem you need to submit some more information. Please read the following: Minimum information needed for assistance. As far as the "VBox.log.zip" goes, here's what you do:
- Start the VM.
- Record the error message. EXACTLY. Post a screenshot if you have to.
- Shut down the VM (if it hasn't aborted by itself).
- Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager.
- Select "Show Log..."
- Save it, ZIP it and attach it in your response.
On top of that, we'd like to see the "recipe" of the VM, the .vbox file:
- Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager.
- Select "Show in Finder/Explorer/Whatever".
- ZIP it and attach it in your response.

Re: Upsize graphic ram for an existing virtual appliance
Dear socratis,
1. Yes, Im referring to the screen of the guest OS.
2. It's impossible to install the GAs, because the screen of the guest OS is so small, that I can't use it anyway. That's my problem.
3. The version of my VB is 5.0_5.0.14-105127-Debian-jessie_amd64
4. Host is a debian 8 64 bit version with 16 GB RAM and 4 GB VRAM
5. Guest is Kali Linux 2.0 with round about 2 MB VRAM - I can't say it with sureness, because there are only numbers at 1 MB and 128 MB. Used massstorage are 8.5 GB.
6. I have to translate the error message:
The fullsize mode couldn't be activated, because the guest got not enough VRAM.
You should configure the VM this way, that it has at least 33.00 MB VRAM.
7.The recipe, I don't understand what you mean, because I can't find anything similar to that what you mentioned, when righclicking the VM in the VM Manager. I'll get a menu with points like
Allgemein
System
Display
Massstorage and so on.
Nothing that could be saved.
TIA and
best regards
