Provlem with the CD drive

Post by GALEGO »

Very little experience of using Oracle VM. I am using Windows 7 as host and Windows 98 as guest. Works fine, except that I can not access the CD drive and install the old programs I want to run in Windows 98.

Does anyone can help me?

Normally it works fine just to define the CD as "Host Drive D:" (of whatever drive your CD is). However Windows 98 can be a bit more fussy than newer versions. If that is the case, I suggest you convert the CDs to ISO image files, and use these rather than the physical CDs.

Please, how do I convert the CD's to a ISO file? And afterwards, how to use those ISO files?

Thanks in advance.

There are heaps of programs which will do that. Just google it.

To have the vm read the ISO file, assign the ISO file to the vm's CD drive in the machine settings.

Since I had my mod notes open anyway: my favorite CD->ISO imager is ImgBurn, good and free.

Please, how do create a virtual CD drive in the Windows 98, which is already installed?

It is my first time working with VM.

Once again, thanks in advance.

It already contains a CD drive unless you deleted it from the VM recipe yourself.

However, make sure the VM is shut down and look at the Storage panel in the VM settings.

Make sure an IDE controller is present. Make sure a SATA controller is not (Win98 predates SATA by about a billion years).

Make sure a CD drive is attached to the IDE controller. Add one if it isn't.

To mount media (e.g. an ISO), select the CD drive in the middle panel, and choose your media in the right panel.

Thank you mpack.

Yes, is there where I have been tryyng to instal the CD drive.

Below the Controller : IDE, I have

- first, as primary master, the Windows 98. vdi file

- second, as secondary slave, the windows98se.iso file, which corresponds to the Windows 98 operating system, I believe

I tried to install a new a new optical drive, but it asks for a ISO file ...

Do not know what to do.

You don't need a new optical drive. Finish installing Win98, then you can unmount the Win98 installer ISO. Then select whatever other ISO you want to use. We have already discussed how you would create your own ISOs.

Thank you mpack.

I do not know what I did, perhaps deleted the previous virtual hard disk, and Windows 98 does not run. And now I can not install again Windows 98. It seems that I can not increase the actual size of the virtual hard disk above 9 M, and that could be the reason why it crashes during set-up.
