I have run an Ubuntu VM as a guest before, just download the .iso installer from http://www.ubuntu.com/download, and insert it in the guest's virtual cd drive. It should work fine.

That's certainly possible. They may have been doing maintenance, the server could have been down, etc. They working for you now?

Well there you go. There is a difference however, one has premade guests, the other is do it yourself.
