How to FTP vbox from Windows to get appserver log?

Post by jeffjohnvol »

Hi. So glad I found this forum, and even more impressed that it's from Oracle and using phpbb. Their typical forum on their site is sooo hard to work with, (hard to find, get notifications etc), but oh well.

I did some quick searches but couldn't find this.

I'm getting a SQL error when working within PS on a VBox 5.0 install. This is a normal kind of PS related error, not a problem with the Vbox install itself - it's working beautifully. Typically on a client site, I would ftp to the LOG folder and look at the application server log, but here, I do not know how to access the typical application server folder structure as I normally would (ultraedit through ftp service).

Is there something I need to do on the Linux server to enable the ftp service? I can follow instructions well, but I'm not a unix guy, so if the answer is yes, can you please point to a tut that explains it or be explicit on instructions.

Thanks.
Jeff

Ftp into the guest from a Windows PC. I will assume, please correct me if I'm wrong, you have a guest running on a Linux host and you wish to access the guest via ftp. If you have a network running between the guest and the rest of the world you should be able to ftp into it. You need to open ports in whatever firewalls might exist, and you need to have the right kind of network setup in Virtualbox. See section 6 in the manual for what kinds of Virtualbox networks are available.

Can you access the internet in the guest? What type of Virtualbox network have you set your guest's NIC?

Sorry, I'm new to vbox and this forum, so my nomenclature may be wrong. I have a windows 7 laptop, running vbox 5.0.12 with an appliance I imported that is running Linux (version Oracle 64 bit). I assume that means a Linux guest, let me know if that's wrong.

It has one adapter that is host-only (PCnet-FAST III).

I will read chapter 6 after I post this... thanks for the quick reply.

OK, so you're trying to ftp into the Oracle (yes I believe that is Linux) guest from the Windows host laptop. The network is Host-Only. You should have a network connection between the host and guest. Can you ping your Linux guest form the Windows OS using the guest's IP address?

I was at one point, but a test just now shows that I can't. Not sure if adding the optical drive and the guest additions iso messed up my install, or perhaps some sudo steps I tried in chapter 5 messed me up... I'm importing a backup appliance I saved yesterday. I'll report back once I can get the ping to work.

Thank goodness for backups...

Yes, I can ping it.

I know I can access the web server through //192.168.56.101:8000, I just can't FTP it.

Shared folders would work, but the instructions don't appear to work for me. I can log in as root, and run the first step, but I get an error.

Kudos for having a backup!

If you can get to the web server through the Virtualbox network, then Virtualbox is doing its job, and the rest would be configured in the host OS or the guest OS. Best of my knowledge, Windows' default firewall has no outbound rules which would interfere with ftping into the guest. As a quick test, turn off the Windows firewall and see if you can get through. If you installed any antivirus on the host it may have replaced or added its own firewall which may be interfering. There's no firewalls in Virtualbox that I know of. Are you sure you have configured the ftp server in the guest correctly? I would have no idea how to set that up in a Linux guest.

I found this which is specific to Peoplesoft on VirtualBox and does what I need. Posting for anyone else that comes across this thread

I can't post a link since I've been a member less than a day, but you can get it from this:

google "extending-peoplesoft-virtual-machines-capabilities".
