VirtualBox.exe crash on VM start

VirtualBox.exe (or VBoxHeadless.exe) crashes with the following error message when starting a VM:

VirtualBox.exe - Application Error
'The instruction at 0x0d015af0 referenced memory at 0x0d015af0.
The memory could not be written.

Click on OK to terminate the program"

The "Starting VM" dialog from VirtualBox Manager is stuck at 20%. The "Starting virtual machine" dialog from the crashed VM window is stuck at 0%. Waiting does not have any effect.

Clicking OK on the crash dialog gives the following error from VirtualBox Manager:

VirtualBox - Error
"Failed to open a session for the virtual machine 'default'."

Host: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit, 8GB RAM
Guest: Linux (boot2docker image), 64-bit, 2GB RAM

VirtualBox 4.1.32 tested also and does not have issues.
