Guru Meditation -4014 (VERR_VMX_INVALID_GUEST_STATE)

Post by legacy92 »

I am utterly stuck I have tried VMware with Win 10 Win 7, Parallels with Win 10 Win 7 & chrome and now Virtual Box with Win 7 and 10. All have been done wiht Physical DVDs and ISO image files in each instance as soon as i have set up and it goes to attempt to install the OS and it crashes or hangs on each product. Given it is happening on each product i am thinking is must be my IMAC settings. I have a 27 Inch 10,3 IMac I5 2009 12 Gb ram.

In my log I have run Microsofts Win 10 Edge Testing Image that was imported Windows developed website
VirtualBox VM 5.0.12 r104815 darwin.amd64 (Dec 18 2015 17:29:37) release log

Any help greatly appreciated. Log Files attached had to cull what i didn't think was relevant as file size was 162kb

This is in System Log if the helps

Welcome to the VirtualBox Forums. Unfortunately there are a couple of problems with your first post.

You posted in "OS X Guests". However this is a Win10 guest, not an OS X guest. Moving this topic to "Windows Guests".

Also missing IMHO is a clear statement of the problem, including precise error messages. The topic title is poor as well - it gives no indication of why anyone should want to view this topic.

VMX is the hardware acceleration feature (AKA VT-x). If it's in an invalid state then my guess is that that something else may be using it.

Yes, but the OP is on a Mac running OSX. Kind of difficult, but not impossible.

@legacy92 : Do you have any antivirus, virtualization or any 3rd party programs worth mentioning?

Run the following three commands in a Terminal:
    system_profiler SPExtensionsDataType > Profiler.txt
    zip Profiler.zip Profiler.txt
    rm Profiler.txt
You'll end up with a "Profiler.zip" in the directory where you run the commands. Attach it here with your reply (see the "Upload attachment" at the end of the form).

OK, I took a look at the output of the system profiler. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the installation of 10.11 that you have is an update, not a clean install. Not sure if this could lead to problems or not, but I'm just throwing it out there. Having said that, here are some kexts that I found installed in your system and that are non-Apple made.
  • [*]APExtFramebuffer, Signed by: Developer ID Application: Squirrels LLC (67X2M9MT5G)
    [*]AirParrotDriver, Signed by: Not Signed
    [*]Terminus, Signed by: Not Signed
[*]ufsd_NTFS, Signed by: Developer ID Application: Paragon Software GmbH (LSJ6YVK468)
From these ones, the "APExtFramebuffer" is from Squirrels for the AirParrot. The "Terminus" one is a little bit shaky, but it seems that it comes with Roxio. There are a lot of reports on the web about issues caused by this one. I'm not 100% sure that any of these takes over VT-x. One thing I'm sure about is that something is wrong/conflicting with your setup.

Thanks for that if I did a clean install of OS X onto a USB and only installed virtual box and boot to USB and try to install win 10. If I don't get the error that will prove it is one of my third party apps as you suspect. If I get a error then I suppose it's OS X/Mac hardware that is causing the problem. If you think that is a good idea I will try in the morning and also get the error log if that occurs.

Thoughts?

Ps also the system was a clean install latest OS X but then used time machine to transfer profile settings, files, apps etc. so not really clean after that I suppose.

From the searches I did, only one more case of a Mac having a VTX-related Guru meditation showed up. So, I would suspect one of the 3rd party apps. Don't know / can't tell you which one might be the culprit. But, it doesn't hurt to try with a fresh install. After that (and what I believe is going to be a no-problem installation) you should start looking one by one your apps to see which one might interfere.

Mmmm interesting on a clean install with nothing but Vbox installed and Microsofts Developer Image used I still got the same error. That is very surprising. Looks like with my iMac Machine 10,3 with the latest OSX on clean install is somehow causing a conflict.
Not to sure where to go to from here I have Windows Bootcamp so will just have to use that. Always a bit of a pain as I use bit locker encryption and would have been nice to start win 10 in VM and slide across to Apple side as opposed to having to hard boot in to Win 10.
Thanks for your time Socratis I think I will call is quits and wait/hope that futures software updates in VMware, Parallels or VBox somehow fix the issue.
