Choppy audio and eventually cuts out entirely

Post by Lythacore »

Hey all, I really need help. I can't quite figure out this problem I'm having. I'm running:
Virtual box 5.0.12.4815 on Windows 10 64 bit 8gb. I am running windows XP 32 bit with 1gb of that 8gb ram, and 2 of my 8 cores. I have a AMD FX8350. I have guest additions installed. I attached a log file.

I have two issues:
1. Audio is VERY choppy in some games. Worst one is The Sims. It is so choppy/laggy that it's unplayable unless it's on mute, but that's not fun at all. It should be noted that I disabled hyper-v and gave my virtual box 2 cores instead of 1 to improve the gameplay, as the sound was a bit laggy before, the game was lagging very slightly, and the screen was tearing. The game no longer lags and the screen does not tear, but the sound became 100x worse. I tried disabling the cores and the check box that is required to run more than 1 core, but it doesn't fix the sound now that hyper-v is disabled / the virtual box is passthrough instead of emulation.
2. Games that ran before this update no longer run. Prime example is Might and Magic 7, which now says: "There aren't any 3D3 devices to init." and terminates. It was working on 3D hardware acceleration before but now it won't work run on that / it's grayed out, and software graphics mode crashes instantly.

Edit: Sound just cut out entirely for The Sims and went dead silent.

I see this in the log…

Code: Select all

00:00:03.549079 supR3HardenedErrorV: supR3HardenedScreenImage/NtCreateSection: rc=VERR_BAD_EXE_FORMAT fImage=1 fProtect=0x5 fAccess=0x2 \Device\HarddiskVolume4\Windows\System32\drivers\atikmdag.sys:
00:00:03.549360 supR3HardenedErrorV: supR3HardenedScreenImage/NtCreateSection: cached rc=VERR_BAD_EXE_FORMAT fImage=1 fProtect=0x2 fAccess=0x5 cHits=1 \Device\HarddiskVolume4\Windows\System32\drivers\atikmdag.sys
I don't know what it means but the errors have cropped up here and there with hosts with AMD graphics.

I'm sure someone will know.

As an update, sound cuts out for my entire virtual box after about 30 mins no matter what I'm doing and seems to chop (even if it's only a little) in all programs.

Has anyone else had this issue and figured it out or has anyone else gotten a chance to take a look at this thread and the logs? I appreciate any help I can get.

OK, I'll bite... Do you have "general" audio problems, or problems with "applications that are assuming that have complete control of the physical hardware and are actually trying to take advantage of it"?

Because, you have to remember, you are running on virtual hardware, which means that somewhere there has to be a software translation (between hardware/software) for things to work. And you know what they say. Sometimes things get "lost in translation". So, in other words, there are glitches. They are always going to be. Some of them may get addressed. If customers are willing to pay for the developers that are going to work on the issues...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

It appears to be both. Some programs are choppy, others aren't, but in the end, the virtual box loses all audio after 30-40 mins regardless of a program running in it or not. The audio in it just stops working. So there is something wrong with the entire thing for me.

Also note that the sound worked pretty well until I disabled hyper-V.

I never managed to get this fixed and just switched to Hyper-V instead. Thanks for those who did take a look at it though!
