Could not read from the boot medium

Post by Stephen Ayers »

In preparation to upgrade a Windows 8.1 guest vm to Windows 10, I uninstalled the guest additions and powered down the vm. Now I cannot start the vm. I get the "could not read from the boot medium" error. How do I recover from this error (without reverting to a backup)?

Host is a Windows 8.1 Pro, 64-bit machine.
VirtualBox v5.0.12r104815

Log file is attached.

There is no way on this blue planet this VM ever booted. Besides the obvious memory allocation (practically non-existent), you actually have no hard drive, DVD or network card to boot from. I have a feeling that you're not telling us the whole story...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Thanks socratis - you made me laugh.

I really have been using this vm for a very long time. But clearly, it had more memory and a harddrive, etc. when it was working.

I restored the vm from a backup, saved the vm details to a text file and did a diff with the details I originally posted. Something about uninstalling the guest additions really messed up the vm's settings.

I've attached the diff, just in case anyone is interested.

I'll try again and see if it was just a fluke.

Thanks again.
