[SOLVED] vb 5.0.12 x32 guest w7 ultimate upgrade to w10 refused

Post by gg99 »

the w7 ultimate vm with the proper vmadditions on the vb 5.0.12 r104815 running on windows 8.1 x64host
could not upgrade because
virtualbox graphics adapter not compatible with windows 10

I already set the vm as windows 10 x32 bit type in vbox and ensure 3d support installed in the vmadditions

what else can I do?

You could try to search for a solution! It usually works miracles!

For example, I get about 425 results searching for "virtualbox graphics adapter compatible windows 10 site:forums.virtualbox.org". I bet that you can find the answer somewhere in there...

Try uninstalling the guest additions first. Restart the guest, Then update.

thx for replying, I do search first before asking for help.
unfortunately they did not help,. vbox 5.0.12 on window host is supposed to support windows 10 vm. that is why I upgrade the vbox to this version.
I have tried re-installing vmadditions before and after after marking the vm as windows 10 type. no difference, also made sure 3d support was installed for the vm.
no differeces.
I called the vmaditions proper because I have refreshed it by re-installing. the latest avail for the version.
btw whenever vmaddtion is installed, reboot is alwasy necessary and that is what I do before trying to do anything next

I know some people have success with fresh install of windows 10 vm however I do need to upgrade thw w7 vm - too much at stake to do a fresh install. if no proven method of upgrade, I just hold off until proper support is available

hope a developer will look into the issue of the virtualbox graphic adapter

Lou said to un-install, not re-install the GAs. Did you completely remove the GAs before attempting to upgrade?

If this is truly the situation, do a backup of that guest!
See this tutorial Moving a VM and re-interpret it as "Backing Up a VM".

Many people have succeeded in upgrading a Win 7 vm to Win 10, but it does not always work (just as it does not always work on a hard metal install). It really depends on the state of the system being upgraded.

Try to make it as easy for the upgrade software as possible. Tidy the system up and remove anything you don't really need. If the upgrade software complains about a particular piece of software, remove it. You can reinstall it in Win 10 after the upgrade if it is Win 10 compatible. (If it is not it will disappear anyway).

Run an integrity check and importantly check that it is activated and will pass WGA (Windows genuine advantage). And as noted above, remove the guest additions.

Even then there is no guarantee that it will work. I had one Win 7 install on metal which simply refused to work without a reinstall of the Win 7 OS. It was working fine and was activated, but the upgrade would not run.

I did uninstall oracle vm addition and reboot
verified that programs and features does not show any oracle vm addditions nor graphics adapter.

windows 10 upgrade still complained
"VirtualBox Graphics adapter
the display manufacturer hasn't made your display compatible windows 10. check with the manufacturer for support"
what can I do to clean it all out?

I tried under an administrator ID to remove all files and folder containing oracle. however all but one file required trusted installer authority.
I suppose I could take ownership of the folders and files whose name contains oracle. however windows 7 icacls is not avail to do mass change of quite a large number folders and files to change one one on explorer.

any other easy way?

How are you trying to run the update. Are you doing it from Windows Update?

I would run the upgrade from the Windows 10 ISO file (google windows 10 iso). I have never seen an upgrade run that way complain about the graphics adapter if the GAs are uninstalled.

If you look in Device Manager in Windows 7, what does it list as the graphics adapter?

BillG,
thx, you are right on, despite vmaddition uninstall the GA is still oracle GA. tried to uninstall the GA from dev mgr, reboot, still the same - can't get rid of the Oracle GA!

I had to shutdown the w7 vm, ensure PAE/NX is enabled for the processor tab for the vm setting - I suspect W10 assume need for hyper-v configuration. However I don't see myself running hyper-v inside the vm.

a side note, the full vm system setting is Vt-x, Nested paging, and NX enabled

The upgrade was completed albeit it lost some custom settings and have to go through office 2013 setup and chewed up almost all free space in system drive.
looks like best to allocate at least 80GB for the system drive for windows 10 when you have office 2013
