Show headless VM from command line?

Post by vaggrippino »

After I start a headless or detachable VM, is there any way to show it from the command line?

I like using the command line and scripting and automating everything. I can show a headless VM by opening the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager GUI, right-clicking on the VM, and selecting "Show", but I'd prefer something like a VBoxManage option.

This question has been asked before, more than once, but the threads are old and the only suggested solutions are to use RDP or save the machine state and restart it not in a headless mode.

The particulars:
  • VirtualBox Version 5.0.10 r104061
  • Host: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.10586], 64-bit, 16Gb RAM
  • Guest: Ubuntu 15.10, 64-bit, 2048Mb RAM
I didn't attach the log files because it's not an error report, just a usage question.

Thank you.

This is not possible, at least not with built-in VBox functionality. The command line application VBoxManage is not aware of any windows. On X11 (Linux) hosts there is a tool called wmctrl. I guess a similar tool is available on Windows hosts as well.
