VBox doesn't respond after recent Windows update

Post by Sunny10 »

Hello Expert,

My Windows 10 went through an update 3 days ago and ever since the Virtual Box doesn't start. When I click on it the cursor goes on waiting for few seconds then nothing happens. I have been trying to resolve it but no help. These are the updates happened:
KB3124200, KB3119147, Other updates for Microsoft Office 2010.

I am currently working on uninstalling those updates but that seems to be little challenging.

I also though of uninstalling VBox and installing back again but I am afraid that it would delete the VMs which I can't even think of. Is there a way to reinstall VBox without having to lose the existing VMs ?

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Uninstalling, installing, re-installing VBox will not touch your VMs in any way, shape or form. Just like any other application, these actions do not touch your data (which is what your VMs are).
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Thanks, but when I right click on the VirtualBox I don't see the option Show Log.
Please check the screenshot I have attached.

I have also uninstalled and then re-installed but it still doesn't run when I click on it.

1. You right-click on the VM, not on VirtualBox. Read what mpack wrote again.
2. You have not attached a screenshot. If it is a screenshot of right-clicking on the VirtualBox shortcut, don't bother.

I have the same problem. Virtualbox won't start at all following the recent windows 10 update(s). Can't create a VM log file as the GUI wont start. 3 background processes start but close again before I can even find them in task manager list.

No, wanted to look online in case there was a simple solution before trying anything myself (I don't use it that often anyway).

IME the usual reason for something like this is that a VirtualBox driver has been jostled out of position, in which case an uninstall/reinstall will often fix it.

But how can I click on VM if VirtualBox itself isn't starting, I am sorry I am missing something here.

I have uninstalled and installed it back again but its not working. Please help me its very urgent

However, currently I am having the VBox version 4.3.26 and I think if I install the latest version 5.0.10 then it might fix the issue but I am afraid it might not run the VM that I created already through the version 4.3.26.

First of all, if you want urgent support, you'll have to pay $$$$$. Here is a user-support forum where we volunteer our time and efforts without any payment ;)

Now, you have to be clearer about your situation. You updated Windows and VirtualBox won't start. A similar problem by another user was resolved by re-installation of VirtualBox. You say that it didn't help in your situation. You'll have to look at your installation log and see if anything has failed. Don't ask me how to do this, I don't use Windows. Google is your friend.

Another thing that you can do is to look at the VBoxHardening.log (if it exists). See Minimum information needed for assistance for more information.

Thanks a ton..!

I will surely try those options you suggested.

1) No, it will run your VMs just fine. I have VMs that I have upgraded since the 3.x VBox versions. No problem.
2) If in doubt, do a backup of your VM folder. See Moving a VM, but think of it as backing up a VM. Instead of move, copy...
