Aliases fail on upgrade to OS X El Captian
I upgraded my mac OS X yosemite to el captain. Now I am unable to use the aliases of the VMs on my desktop. I tried to erase them and create the aliases again by right clicking the vms and pressing "create alias on desktop", but to no avail. Mac would say, when i tried to use them, that i needed to set an application to open them. I selected virtualbox, but it said that it wouldn't open it. Now i have to open the vbox program to get at my VMs, but i really liked those desktop aliases. Any suggestions?

Re: Aliases fail on upgrade to OS X El Captian
I suspect it has something to do with SIP. I don't normally use aliases but when I created one for a guest two things happen, the one you describe, and the icon isn't set when you chose VirtualBox. However, after choosing VirtualBox as the Application the alias does open the guest. It could be a VirtualBox issue with OSX 10.11. Hard to say.

Well I found the problem on mine anyway. Which version of OSX are you running? I'm running 10.11.2 and for some reason Spotlight indexing was disabled on my internal drive.

@Perryg danke
@Mint lover do your aliases look generic or do they look like this?

I wonder why i forgot to mention that. Before I upgraded, they looked like that screenshot. Afterwards, they were generic. (a piece of paper with a fold in the top right hand side)

Ok, In the Mac terminal, run this command…
after a couple minutes if not sooner, the aliases should work again. You may have to delete any old ones but I'm not sure of that. I don't normally use them.
Code: Select all
sudo mdutil -E /OSX, Linux and Windows Hosts & Guests

you may have to restart as well. the command just makes Spotlight re-index the drive.
