vista 32 bit no ethernet adapter

Post by Johnster »

I created a virtualbox with vista 32 bit and it installed successfully, except for the network adapter. I have attempted to load several flavors of network adapters after doing extensive research. Nothing is working. Does anyone know the fix for this? My computer is windows 10.

NAT should work along with setting the adaptor type to PCnet-Fast III in the network settings and Cable Connected is checked.

Make sure the Windows 10 Firewall isn't blocking access.

Actually The Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop adapter works. I thought Vista may be too old.

I have two options under the devices menu, but when I go into the VM and run device manager, I get an ethernet controller listed under Other devices and I've tried to install the Intel nic to no avail. Where can I get the correct driver for this or the pcnet-fast iii that shows up in my XP vm?

Which one is it then? Is it XP or is it Vista? If you changed the default template, your VM is going to have a problem installing the drivers natively. So, change it back to the default (for XP: PCnet-FAST III, for Vista: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop) and your VM will find the appropriate drivers and install them (they're built into the guest OS). And, for future reference, do not change the defaults suggested by the wizard unless you know what you're doing.

I have two different virtuals. One is xp and it works fine. The other is Vista 32 bit and this is the one that has problems with the nic. I took all the defaults when i installed both vms. I have now downloaded the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop drivers and installed. It isn't working either. It gives an error 31 (thank you MS for these wonderfully informative error codes).

I have uninstalled and reinstalled at least 10 times.

I found the solution. After installing in the vm, I went back to the vm manager and looked at every option for the adapter1 card. There was my realtek wireless and my internal ethernet. I decided to look at adapter 2 and when I selected nat and type of card, the Intel Pro nic was in the list. I selected it and the VM detected the card. Bam! I was feeling homicidal prior to that!

Thanks everyone for the info, it got me pointed in the right direction.
