HELP!

Post by Werdna »

Hello!! I noticed my C drive was full so I decided to move VirtualBox from my C drive to D drive to free up a lot of space. Now whenever I try to open VirtualBox I get this message

VirtualBox - Critical Error
Failed to create the VirtualBoxClient COM object.
The application will now terminate.
Callee RC: REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG (0x80040154)

I have tried repairing VirtualBox, I have tried reinstalling it, I even deleted everything with "VirtualBox" in its name from regedit. I still get the message. Help? ASAP

A spot of googling on the error message:

Code: Select all

Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG site:forums.virtualbox.org
shows that this error may be because Virtualbox wasn't installed properly. The PC has to be logged in on the user account that plans to run the machines, then to run the installer one right-clicks the installer and chooses "Run as Administrator". (Do NOT log out and log back in as "Administrator".)

First, take good backups of your system! (A good backup would have helped in fixing what got broken after all the moving.)

Wernda, since you were moving things around, I would suggest that you look at the tutorial Moving a VM and if you didn't move the guests this way, move them back then use this tutorial to move them again. Also, it is completely all right to have Virtualbox on your C drive and all the guests on another drive. Virtualbox only takes up 165MB or so on my system.

I would recommend a complete uninstall, then shutdown and power off, then restart & install. Your guests will still exist, but there is a chance they won't show in the Virtualbox GUI, especially for Werdna's case. If the guests do not show up, search for and double-click the guests' .vbox files. This will register the guests with the GUI. If any propblems arise, post back.

PMFJI, but I have the same error. I have not been doing anything to VirtualBox, just tried to load it and got the error.
@scottgus1 - Followed your instructions and still have the error, viz Callee RC: REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG (0x80040154).
Best wishes for 2016
